Beacon is a town in Schoharie County, New York, United States. The population was 3,472 at the 2010 census. Beacon is located on the Susquehanna River and is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The central square in Beacon is named after John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated there in 1963. One of the most common tourist attractions in Beacon is the ruins of Fort Niagara which can be seen from many places within the town limits. The fort was built by British colonists in 1795 and has been abandoned since it surrendered to American forces during the Revolutionary War. The first settler in what would become Beacon was James Kempton who arrived with his family in 1688. Kempton’s farmstead became known as “Kemptown” and today’s village began to form when he donated land to build a courthouse and barracks for local militia troops during the American Revolution. In 1805, Stephen Girard opened a store at what is now Main Street and named it “Girardville” after himself and his father-in-law Samuel Griggs (a Loyalist refugee from Rhode Island). In 1815, John Fenton bought a tract of land south of Girardville from George Armstrong Crouse for $10 per acre ($220 per km²). This property would later become known as Fort Niagara National Monument. A post office called "Beacon" was established at this site on October 15, 1825; its first postmaster was Silas Higginson. By 1860, most of present-day Beacon had developed; Jno Willsbury conducted an early census that year listing 277 residents living in 83 houses or shops within a mile (1 km) of what would become downtown: “There are but few buildings now remaining excepting some chimneys leaning against trees or fences standing here & there among piles of bricks used for building…the only thing remaining original being Mr Willsbury's house built by him about two hundred years ago on high ground near where he now stands erecting another one lately….It may be safe to say that not more than one half century has passed since then." Nearby settlements continued to grow until around 1800 when most settlers had either left or moved away because of religious persecution brought about by warring Native American tribes nearby including those associated with Jesuit missionaries working among them.- From 1800-1850 over 100 structures were erected along Erie Canal just east/northwest of modern day Albany NY including 4 churches., 2 taverns., 6 stores., 1 bakery., 1 woolen mill., 1 blacksmith shop and several other assorted dwellings.-growth stopped abruptly due largely to depletion Of water resources caused by development outside watershed

Beacon is named after George Washington and was founded by his followers on November 12, 1792 as a small community on the Finger Lakes region of western New York. The first settler was Amos Beard who arrived in 1793. In 1814, Reverend John Greenough built the first church in Beacon and it became an important center for religious activity in Erie County during the 1800s. In 1825, Samuel Morse established a telegraph line through Beacon to Niagara Falls and this led to increased communication between western New York and eastern Ontario during the 19th century. In 1857, local farmers formed the Farmers' Alliance which fought for better representation in government and against railroad development within their area. This led to public anger towards Albany politicians who were continuing to buildroads while neglecting their constituents. On October 14, 1857, a group of men including George Armstrong Custer rushed into Beacon while Sheriff John Fenton was serving dinner inside his home and killed him along with four other people before fleeing; this event is known as Custer's Raid. The raid had a significant impact on education in western New York as most of what we know about war today comes from newspapers such as Harper's Ferry that were published at the time
