Beacon, New York is a town in Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is northeast of the city of Buffalo and southeast of the village of Tonawanda. The first European settlers in Beacon were Dutch colonists who arrived there in 1624. In 1792, the area became part of Albany; however, both towns continued to exist until 1825 when they merged into one larger municipality under the name of Buffalo. When Buffalo was dissolved as a city in 1898 it lost its status as a town and its citizens reverted back to their individual surnames and villages (Tonawanda being the only exception). In 1953, during the construction of Interstate 95 through Tioga County, some residents in Beacon built an informal settlement on land donated by Clarence Wertheimer near what is now exit 15A off I-95 northbound near where he used to farm. This unofficial community came to be known as Beacon Hill. After years of growth and development by local residents and businesses over successive administrations including that of then- Mayor Edwin Jaffe (1977 - 1993), state officials approved plans for an official border line between Beacon Hill and Buffalo which would have included demolition or relocation of many homes within Beacon Hill as well as erection of white picket fences along the official boundary between these two communities. Eventually approvals were granted for a shopping mall on land west side OfBuffalo's Elmwood Park neighborhood which opened in 1998 anchored by Macy's department store; this made it possible for much more traditional aspects associated with developing small towns such as agriculture (becoming less important) while still providing access to key urban amenities within minutes' driving range for most inhabitants. Despite efforts by several groups – led mainly by then-Town Supervisor John O'Neill – seeking Repeal or Amending One Town Laws passed by Legislatures prior to 2001 limiting how much autonomy eachtown can enjoy within their respective borders sinceateurhoods had been revoked or amended without consent from majorities therein following passage/enactment thereof via referendum results – all attempts failed due largely to opposition from powerful business interests wielding political power at both municipal levels simultaneously extant at that time – even after newly minted Borough President Ruben Diaz announced his intention upon taking office in March 2009 following defeat by incumbent David Heineman with little warning having prevailed preceding his election that he would take up such issues should such conditions continue existing; finally effective June 1st 2011 pursuant to duly constituted organic law then operative therein referenda held throughout entire countywide just prior thereto permitting full implementation therebyforth viz., amending One Town Laws specifically mentioned supra & hereinbelow governing zoning & other matters pertaining thereto effectively terminating any remaining vestige’s’of bifurcated government structure existing prior thereto despite repeated denials from various elected officials aforesaid [i]nstead thereof becoming fully operational effective immediately thereafter thus fulfilling originally expressed wishes / aspirations / goals duly evidenced thru actions duly taken since November first last year thenceforward viz., Repealing/Amending One Town Laws subject hereinabove] The formal annexation process began on October 6th 2006 with initiation letters sent out affecting approximately 2 dozen residences situated east and south around what has come to be known locally as "Mall Time" consisting primarily east-west streets running perpendicular from major Route 7 heading north/south across town center towards Buffalo before intersecting Route 213 southwestward concurrent with roughly midway point between those streets - giving rise historically directly adjacent Mall Time site location Finally effective upon presentationlarization video evidence rendering all exterior signage identifying said site exclusively "Beacon Hills Mall" no longer functional whatsoever
