Beacon is a census-designated place (CDP) in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Beacon CDP includes the village of Beacon and a small portion of the town of West Seneca. The first area that was called Beacon was on the west side of Seneca Lake about four miles south of where modern-day Beacon sits today. The name may have been given to a small creek running through the area which may have had this same name back then. A post office operated at Beacon from 1825 to 1872; it later became known as West Seneca. From 1892 until 1969, it was located in Erie County and was named for George Washington Beason who served as U.S. Minister to Great Britain from December 1793 to May 1795 under President James K Polk during American involvement with World War I He also served as Mayor of Buffalo from 1893 to 1895 and as Lieutenant Governor from 1895 until 1897 when he resigned due to term limits set by General John Fenton Grant who succeeded him lieutenant governor In addition to its namesake George Washington Beason being an important figure in early Buffalo history (and later one of its most successful mayors), another significant resident here around that time included Daniel Webster who represented Erie County in Congress between 1907 and 1912 and again in 1916 before retiring after two terms When Niagara Falls opened up eastward above Seneca Lake on July 16th,1824, farmers living near what is now Beacon decided they would move because their land would be within easy reach if there were ever a big natural disaster such as an earthquake or flood along the border with Canada A Post Office & Grain Elevator were built at Southold about 2 1/2 miles southwest of what is now current day Beacon along with stores for local farmer’s markets . By 1870 much larger communities had arisen around these areas like Goshen (711 people) west of Niagara Falls & Canandaigua (3,554 people) east outside Niagara Falls . On July 3rd 1881 , parts off western edge northeast corner original Clinton Township line merged into newClinton Township !! This made possible consolidation & annexation by other towns over time including: Auburn Hills (#1), North Tonawanda (/2), Albion Heights (#3), Millville (#4), Canandaigua (/5), Gloversville (/6). The post office at Beacon opened on July 1, 1846 and was renamed to Buffalo on July 15th that year. On January 1st, 1902, the entire town of Beacon became an incorporated village under the name of Niagara Falls Village. The village had a population of 2,569 as of the 2000 census; it declined to its current size due to Population Loss from Rochester through annexation by Buffalo during the 1990s until 2002 when it regained its original size
