Beacon is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Orange County and Sullivan County. The population was 1,812 as of the 2010 census. Beacon is known for its historic landmarks, such as the old courthouse, library, and post office. The first Europeans to visit Beacon were Dutch traders in 1614. In 1624 the English explorer John Smith discovered Beacon while exploring mills in Orange County. In 1701 Edward Everett led an expedition to explore new lands east of Albany and named two rivers after himself: "Everett" in honor of General James Eliot (1702-1781), and "Beacon" in honor of Admiral George Washington (1732-1806). In 1814 Commodore John Farragut sailed through the area west of Albany on his way to attack Mexico City. On July 8th he anchored off Beacon Point on Long Island's eastern coast and started construction on a shipyard that would become one of America's most important providers of naval equipment and warships during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1847 merchants from Kingston, New York founded a ferry service between Kingston Landing at Ravenna Bay near modern day Babylon, NY and Beacon Point. This allowed goods from Kingston to be carried overland around Cape Cod without being unloaded at sea or carted ashore; this was an essential part of New England commerce during the war. On December 14th 1851 a group of men from Old Lyme Village founded what would become Beacon Institute for Boys when they petitioned the State Legislature for permission to establish a school within their village center. The first students arrived in January 1852 and enrollment soon reached 20 boys per year with classes starting March 5th followed by classes for girls beginning September 5th. Classes were held at various locations within the village until May 1861 when land was purchased adjacent to modern day Central Park South; construction began on what is now Main Street which became home to Beacon Institute until 1959 when it moved into its present location across from Constitution Hall inside Government Center Mall following plans by Mayor Abraham Lincoln (1809-65) who desired an education complex accessible to all citizens regardless Of wealth or social status. In 1865 Union General Philip Sheridan burned down buildings belonging to both Old Lyme Village School District No 1 & 2 north side Main Street between First Avenue South & Second Avenue North seeking information about Confederate forces located southward along Long Island Sound towards Brooklyn Bridgehead where President Abraham Lincoln had been taken prisoner just weeks earlier during Battle Of Gettysburg; these buildings served as barracks for Union troops garrisoning western Long Island during hostilities against Confederate States Of America. The fire also destroyed several homes situated northeast corner First Ave south & Third Ave north which still stand today next doorto each other across from Pastry Shop bakery (& once housed local ice cream parlor). Beacon, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,083 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Beacon was Nicholas Bourne who arrived in 1807. He and his family built a cabin on the west bank of Beaver Creek. The first store in town was founded by Mr. Allyn in 1810. In 1811, John French opened the first post office in Beacon with five employees and received mail from Albany only twice per month. By 1830, there were twenty-four businesses listed on the local merchants list; however, only six remain today including two banks and four restaurants/bars/. In 1831, George Bower established a grist mill on Beaver Creek which became one of the largest mills in Erie County by 1860; it still operates as a mill Today it processes about 2 million bushels of flour each year for local grocery stores and other retailers across upstate New York . Bower also founded Beacon Female Academy (now known as the State University of New York at Buffalo), which became one of America's leading female institutions when it opened its doors to female students in 1863; enrollment reached 10% by 1886! In 1907–8, he donated land for that city's first college – SUNY Niagara – becoming an important figure within that institution’s development over subsequent years. A&M College was chartered at beacon on October 21st 1912 as Niagara University with an initial enrollment of seventy-five students; it has grown to be one of America's leading universities with more than 12 million alumni living around the world! Beacon residents have long been proud participants In many civic organizations including being memberships In both local chapters Of The American Association Of Colleges And Universities (AAU) since their incorporation as a village back in 1898 › prior to this time ‘the people’ had not actually organized themselves into any recognizable form Of institutionalized society
