Beacon is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. Beacon is located on the southern shore of Lake George and shares borders with Oneonta to the north and Vestal to the south. The first permanent settler in what would become Beacon was Nicholas Flushing in 1786. He named his tract of land "Beacon" after his hometown of Beacon Falls, Nova Scotia. In 1814, John Sanford built a gristmill on the present site of Beacon Falls; it continued in operation until 1845. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1902. In 1822, George Stephenson built a sawmill on Beaver Creek near what is now South Vestal Road. It continued in operation until 1862 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1827, John Fenton erected a blockhouse called Fort Flushing on the western bank of Beaver Creek for use as a post office; it served until 1840. In 1830, Jedediah Smith built an adobe house called Friendship House on the eastern bank of Beaver Creek for himself and his family; it served as their home until 1840 also. In 1833–34, Amos Kendall erected an academy building known as Kendall's Academy which he used as his business headquarters from 1840-1846; it still stands today and is used as a museum operated by Old Time New York State Preservation Board Incorporated (OTNYSB). On May 25th, 1861 US President Abraham Lincoln delivered his inaugural address from Central Park West where he had been inaugurated hours earlier with Vice President Salmon P. Chase at his side: "The citizens of this city will be glad to see you...I want you all to know that I am completely satisfied with your patriotism and your zeal for national defence." Thereafter many buildings were constructed within central park including Flushing’s Blockhouse which still stands today next to Union Station eastbound lane between First Avenue South and Spring Street North

In 1795, John Jay captured a flag from a French ship as it passed through the Strait of Juan de Fuca and flew it from Fort Ticonderoga to show that America had emerged as a new nation. On July 8, 1799, President George Washington presented Congress with a gift - an eagle statuette - as part of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution. The first school in Beacon was built in 1810 by Elias Howe and was soon followed by others. In 1814, under intense pressure from Native American leaders to sell land they felt they had been given without compensation in return for hunting rights, majority-white legislators voted to close all public schools within three years because they claimed such action would promote education among Indians instead of stopping them from raiding white settlements. This measure failed but led to further tension between whites and Indians when white children were taught about Indian culture at local academies set up by missionaries during this time period In 1825 representativesfrom both sides met at Plattsburgh Ferry to try and resolve their differences over tribal land claims After some negotiations lasting two days various parcels were Acquired including 4 lots which were situated on top of hills just south east corner Of Main Street And North Second Avenue From where you can see old stone building today; these lots became known as Beacon Hill after that day The first school bell tolllled out signalizing opening dayof school for students attending local academy called “Hills Academy” It was later renamed “Beacon Academy” After 5 year there will be only 3 grades level1-3 which are now K-8th grade then 4th grade will be added which is now 9th grade due to construction project on lot #4 next door
