Beacon, New York is home to the world’s oldest continuously inhabited community and birthplace of the United States of America. From its earliest days as an agricultural village, Beacon played an important role in the development of both New York State and The United States. Today, Beacon is a vibrant community with a rich history that can be explored through its museums, attractions, and restaurants. In 1777, when the British burned down the old fort at Fort Washington in Manhattan, they also destroyed many of the town’s guns and ammunition stores. Luckily for Beacon residents, their arsenal was salvaged and stored by Captain John Cook during his explorations in 1778-79. After Cook’s visit, local farmers began to use cannons again to defend their homes against Indian attacks. In 1815, when President James K. Polk sent a detachment of Ulysses S. Grant’s Seventh Infantry Regiment through town to attack Confederate forces near Saratoga Springs Battlefield National Monument (now part of Albany), many local men volunteered to help provide artillery support. During World War II, many members of the Beecham family served in the military as soldiers or civilians; one member even became a generalship instructor at West Point! The Beechams are also well known for their contributions to education within our community; Mrs. Beecham founded Beacon High School in 1922 and she still serves on its Board of Trustees today! Beacon was founded by John Greenleaf Whittier in 1837 as a small school and college. In 1851, the college became New York University and the school became an all-male institution. The city of Beacon Heights, which is located on the east side of Beacon Hill, was annexed by New York City in 1898. The university continued to operate out of its buildings on Beacon Street until they were destroyed by fire in 1906. Since then, the university has moved to new facilities on Riverside Drive in adjacent Queens. The first buildings on what is now Riverside Drive were built in 1868 as part of a larger campus expansion for New York University. The old buildings served as classrooms, library and dormitories until they were destroyed by fire in 1906; however, the new structures remain one of the most iconic symbols of New York University. One of the most famous students at NYU during that time was Malcolm X who attended from 1922-1927. He made use of many resources available at NYU including classes taught by Whittier and faculty members such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. In 1969, after more than 150 years at NYU, Whittier College merged with other schools within NYU to form Hunter College; however, Hunter College remains one of NYC's leading universities today with a large number of undergraduate programs and graduate programs offered across several faculties. Beacon also has a rich history dating back to 1837 when John Greenleaf Whittier founded it as a small school and college located on East Portal Avenue in present day Uniondale (on Long Island). It was renaming itself “New York University” following its merger with other schools within NYU in 1969 so that it could be considered an equal partner with other world-renowned institutions like Columbia University and UCLA among others! Today’s Beaconsfield Campus offers undergraduate degree levels from Arts & Sciences through Business Administration/Business Law; graduate degrees from Fine Arts through Health Science/Health Professions along with numerous professional concentrations including Veterinary Medicine/Veterinarian Assistant Studies etcetera! Beacon was first settled in 1792 by the Mayflower Compact signers. The town was established as a village on the river's bank and became an agricultural center with a post office, school, and grocery store. In 1807, the village was merged into the Town of Beacon. On April 14, 1814, the Town of Beacon merged with the Village of Beacon to form the City of Beacon.
