Beacon is a city in the U.S. state of New York, located on the east side of the Hudson River. The population was 22,746 at the 2010 census. The first European settlement in what is now Beacon County was by Dutch colonists who founded Fort Nassau on Governors Island in 1624 as part of their efforts to build a network of military outposts across North America to defend against French and Indian attacks during the early days of English colonial expansion. The colony grew rapidly, but after several years it failed to pay its president (Sir James Butler) salaries and went into receivership in 1628-29; however, it continued to grow until 1701 when an act of Parliament revoked all future charters granted by George II for new settlements within New York State except for Fort Orange near Albany. In 1714, Massachusetts Bay Colony granted land northward from Newtown Creek through what is now Beacon Hill to John Wise and his brother Samuel at West Point on Long Island Sound; this area became known as East Manhattan orlater Queens Village for lack of another name at that time). On February 14, 1716, under the leadership of colonial Governor William Tryon, settlers from Kingston upon Hull landed on Staten Island opposite what is now Battery Park City and began building Fort Tryon which served as a stronghold against French incursions upriver during the early years of British colonialism in North America. In 1807 an act was passed by Congress which created two new counties within New York State: Kings County (the southeast corner then included parts including present-day Brooklyn) and Putnam County (westchester westward along present-day Uniondale)). On November 15th 1812 a detachment from Company K US Artillery Regiment led by Captain Job Chubb arrived at fortifications around Gravesend Harbor from Manhattan Bridge under cover of darkness after being ordered by General Washington not to participate in any operations against Canada that week because he suspected British intentions wereweakening American morale following news reports about Britian's planned invasion force(this event would later becomeknown as "The Battle Of Brooklyn" ). Aftermath revealed that only ten cannon had been brought over with no ammunition available so they engaged no enemy hostilities but were forced back upon returning fire; this demonstrated anew how vulnerable artillery batteries were to surprise attack by unannounced enemies posing as friendly troops without warning their commanders. They built three more forts throughout their stay before finally departing June 6th 1800 en route back home via Charles Town River where they destroyed all six remaining guns defending Staten Island Ferry Landing prior arriving there late Saturday night after spending three days marching instead OF THEIR DUTY! This event remains celebrated each year on Patriot’s Day with teepees erected throughout Garrison Grounds commemorating those lost that day.. Upon their departure Captain Chubb’s unit left behind many artifacts including cannonsballs,, musket balls,, bayonets,, saddles,, bridles,,,, knife boxes,,,, pouches & girdles still lying around today making way for development some 25yrs later!
