Beacon is a small town in the Hudson Valley, New York, United States. It was once part of Westchester County and is now within the Yonkers city limits. The population was 9,500 at the 2010 census. Beacon is known for its history and fortifications, including Fort Wadsworth and Beacon Hill Park. The first European settlement in what is now Beacon came about as part of the 1624 purchase of land by Dutch colonists from Sir Walter Raleigh. The town was named after General Hugh beacon (or beacons) on Long Island Sound, which had been sighted by early Dutch explorers as they sailed westward along the coast of North America. At first it consisted only of a few homes near where present-day Central Avenue crosses the Hudson River. In 1764, when New York became a province of Great Britain following its Confederation with New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Beacon became part of Middlesex County under British jurisdiction. In 1814 it merged with Kingston to form Westchester County; but again returned to Middlesex in 1816 when it formed again with Weehawken into Hunterdon County). With growths in other nearby villages such as Rye and Mount Pleasant around it – all located on fertile valleys floodplains – Beacon began to prosper as an agricultural center during the 1800s. However industrialization began to take hold beginning in the mid-19th century and some businesses closed or moved away due to competition from larger towns like Yonkers or Schenectady; while others grew rapidly thanks to advancements in transportation technology that made goods easier access to markets throughout much of northeastern America. A series of natural disasters hit Beacon during World War II: On December 7th 1941 local residents heard over radio reports that Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor; less than 24 hours later Japanese bombers targeted their targets killing more than 60 people including 20 children playing near Greenpoint Beachfill just outside town limits; two days later American forces invaded Japan resulting in 4 million American casualties – nearly one third of whom were killed or wounded at Beaconsville Road between State Street and North Main Street – making hertown one of the most heavily bombed areas in New York City during that conflict alone [1]. After hostilities ended Beamers rebuilt their homes–mostly single-family dwellings built before 1920–and resumed their life as farmers until 1950 when electricity arrived along with automobiles making farming increasingly difficult[2]. It wasn’t until 1959 when then Mayor John Fenton established a weather station atop Castle Hill overlooking downtown which would eventually become home to Weather Radio Station WBZN (AM). That same year construction began on what would become today’s Fort Wadsworth military base adjacent to town square—the only structure remaining from pre-war days aside from some garages used for storage[3]. Fort Wadsworth served primarily as garrison duty until 1975 when decommissioning began following Operation Neptune's Spear which destroyed many bridges across central New York region [4], leaving little opportunity for civilian use aside from occasional government functions such as emergency response drills conducted at cleared sites using airfields located nearby such as Farmingdale Airport [5] (Donoghue AFB also served briefly during this time period). Today Fort Wadsworth serves instead as a museum open daily 8am-4pm providing insight into both military history and local community life
