The first recorded use of binoculars as telescopes took place in 1868 when two German businessmen named Heinrich Hertz and Friedrich Wilhelm Weber made a journey to Albany using their newly acquired instruments for viewing stars at night. In 1916 Dr Edwin Hubble used his new telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory to show how close galaxies were to one another during this time period. Beacon is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 7,844 at the 2010 census. Beacon is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Beacon were Dutch colonists who arrived there in 1614 and named it "Zeebrugge". They soon after abandoned the village because of an epidemic that killed many people and left a wide area uninhabitable for several years. In 1785, two brothers by the name of Putnam bought some land east of present-day Beacon and founded the town of Putnam on it. The Town Hall was built in 1813 and has been used as a public library since 1903. The original farmers who settled at Beacon included three brothers: Jacobus van der Linden (1729-1812), Hendrik de Valk (1742-1819) and Cornelis Hesseltine (1754-1825). In 1785 they acquired 640 acres (247 hectares) along with some other parcels to form what is now known as the Village of Beacon. The Van der Lindens farmed this land until 1800 when they sold it to John Dolan for $2,500 cash plus five slaves; Dolan had purchased it from Jameson & Co., a slave trading company operating out of Kingston, Jamaica. John Dolan served as Mayor of Buffalo from 1802 to 1807 and again from 1821 to 1822; he also served as Erie County Sheriff from 1800 to 1801 and again from 1809 to 1830. He was married twice: firstly to Susannah Drummond (1769-1845) on October 8, 1786 in Buffalo; secondly on December 12, 1800 to Catharine Browning (1800-1881).Dolan's son Alexander Dolan Jr., born on October 25th, 1787 died unmarried at age 38 years on February 24th 1863 while serving with Company C 1st Regiment Ulysses S Grant's army during the American Civil War at Monmouth Junction NJ where General George Meade directed his army's advance against Confederate forces under Robert E Lee

Beacon, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. The population was 5,471 as of the 2010 census. Beacon is first mentioned in 1624 when two men named John and Nicholas Beane went to live there. Beacon grew rapidly during the 1800s and by 1810 had a population of 2,500. In 1827, the village was renamed after George Washington’s Headquarters at Mount Vernon. The town experienced an influx of settlers in the 1850s due to new railroads coming through the area. By 1860, Beacon had a population of 4,000. The 1870 census counted 10 families living in Beacon with a total population of 21 people. By 1880, it had reached its peak with 24 families and apopulation of 154 people. However, during this time period many businesses closed due to economic difficulties and competition from other villages around the area. In 1892, beaconshire County was created including Beacon and much of what is now upstate New York; however most of Beacon continued to remain within that county until 1967 when it became part of onetime Erie County Beacon has seen some very tough times over the years but has bounced back relatively well thanks largely to its strong community spirit and dedication to education - both formal and informal - which continues today under several different names including Friends School District No 921 (FFSD), Albany-on-the-Lake Consolidated School District (ALLCOSD), Ladies Institute for American Education (LIAE) – all located within one building on Main Street – as well as numerous summer camps for students from surrounding villages who come for fun whether they are looking for learning about history or just getting away from it all!
Beacon is a small village located in the town of Beacon Falls, New York. The population was 721 at the 2000 census. The first settler in Beacon was George Washington who arrived in 1777 and named it after himself. The settlement grew slowly until 1800, when it exploded with growth thanks to new transportation methods and an influx of immigrants. By 1825, Beacon had become a bustling community with over 1,000 residents. During the 19th century, education became an important part of life in Beacon as schools were founded and classes were offered for children from all walks of life. In 1876, the first library was opened in the village and has since been used by both local citizens and schoolchildren alike. In 1951, construction began on what would become the world's largest concrete tower; it would rise 188 feet (59 meters) above ground and remain standing until it was destroyed by fire in 1975. Today, there are few relics remaining from this time period but many memories remain within the village as a result of its History Museum which is open every day from 9am-4pm
