Beacon is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,522 at the 2010 census. Beacon is on the southern border of the city of Buffalo and is bordered by the towns of North Tonawanda to the east and South Buffalo to the west. The village of Beacon Falls lies just south of town line.
The first Europeans to reach what is now Beacon were Dutch traders who passed through in 1614. The area became part of Canada after Confederation in 1867. In 1881, a group of farmers led by John Davenport founded Beacon Hill School as a co-educational academy for boys and girls from rural areas around Buffalo and Canandaigua counties. In 1916, Charles Fenton bought a farmstead north of townline and named it Beacon Hill after his home state, Vermont; he also donated land for a public school system which opened in 1922. The community was renamed Gilmore Heights in 1984 following an donation by developer Harry Gilmore III; it reverted back to its original name in 2006 when development activity within the town stopped abruptly due to bankruptcy issues unrelated to that year's election cycle.
Beacon has experienced significant growth since its incorporation into City Union Township on July 1, 2005. This growth has been fueled largely by two factors: BEACON PRESENTS - an annual event that celebrates local businesses and products - and downtown redevelopment which has seen construction begin on several high-profile projects including retail space for Jamba Juice restaurants as well as new parking garages for local firms such as Subway sandwich shops.
Downtown redevelopment also includes plans for a new library building that will serve as both an educational resource center for students from surrounding communities as well as provide office space for various businesses.
