Batavia is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Batavia was organized in 1825 from parts of the villages of Albion and Rome. In 1837, it became an incorporated town when most of the rest of Erie County were annexed by New York City. The town's first mayor was George Aiken. In 1848, Batavia became a city after being designated as such by the New York State Legislature under the "City Beautiful Act". The amendment to state law creating the city granted it exclusive rights to build public works and make all rules respecting them; this privilege continued until 1903 when Erie County regained control over its own municipal government. The original village site on Canandaigua Creek forms part of what is now Batavia Township and Rome Township. The townships were named for General John Montgomery (1768-1831), who led American forces against Mexico in 1810 during what is known as The Mexican War Of Independence and also founded Montgomery Academy in 1812 which later became State University at Buffalo The first post office opened in Batavia on October 12, 1827 and operated until May 5, 1830 because there was no mail service between Albion and Rome at that time. On February 14th 1840, a new post office called White Plains opened with letters delivered by horseback from Buffalo to White Plains via Ithaca as part of a Pony Express route linking Albany with Rochester/ Niagara Falls across Lake Ontario. During World War II much produce was shipped through Batavia Harbor including fruits like apples from upstate New York but due to tight shipping restrictionsnoneofthevesselsarrivedinNewYorkuntil1946 .On July 2nd 1964 a tornado touched down about 3 miles northeast of batavian center killing 4 people

In 1814, it was renamed New York after George Washington and his first wife, Martha Washington. Batavia is now a census-designated place (CDP) in the Bronx borough of New York City. The early history of Batavia can be traced to 1784, when Captain John Jacob Astor founded the trading post of Batavia on the Hudson River near present-day Yonkers, New York. At its peak, Batavia had about 100 residents and was active in trade with both Europe and Asia. By 1800, however, Batavia's growth had slowed due to competition from other towns on the river bank such as Albany and Syracuse. In 1814, however, Governor James Ketchum ordered the closure of all English settlements in what is now New York following the War of 1812. As a result of this order, many American traders left their posts along the riverbank for new locations such as Batavia. This change in business climate forced Astor to reevaluate his plans for batavian development; he instead decided to move his post downriver to what is now Buffalo Bayou in Texas Heights Township (now Elmhurst). Despite this setback,Batavia continued to grow throughthe years until it reached its peak around 1800; at that point it had about 1200 residents and was one of the most prosperous communities on Long Island Sound. However, during the mid-19th century economic stagnation hit Batavia hard; by 1830 only about 350 residents remained in town while almost all commercial enterprises had closed down or relocated elsewhere. The community did not return to pre-industrial levels until after World War II when Dutch Americans returned home from World War IIand began redevelopingbatavian infrastructure including new housing developments and businesses。 In recent decades there has been renewed interest in batavian history citing changes within local demographics which have resultedin increased access to archival materials online which has allowedfor comparative research into old documentsthat were formerly unavailable..
