Batavia, New York was home to one of the most famous shooting ranges in the world during the 19th century. The range was located on a bluff overlooking the town and it was used for target shooting by both men and women. The range was also used as a training ground for artillerymen and cavalry officers. The first target holders were made from tree logs and they were used for practice until 1827 when new targets were created from wrought iron. The first set of targets consisted of seventy-six round plates that could be rotated to provide different patterns of fire. By 1851, there were more than 300 Targets available at the range. In 1865, Captain Arthur Pryor became owner of the Batavia Rifle Range and he decided to make it his own privaterange. He changed the name to America's First Shooting Range and continued using Target Holders until 1893 when he sold it to Mr. Wm Janson who operated it until 1898 when he sold it back to Capt Pryor who kept it until 1907 when it passed into ownership by Major Elisha Cushing who operated it until 1916 when it was purchased by Colonel John Dickson who continued operating it until 1962 when it passed into ownership by Mr. Harry Bargerwho operates today’s range - America's Second Shooting Range . Batavia was a small town in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, United States. It was located on the north bank of the Rensselaer River, east of Albany. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. The town began as a farming community in 1784. The first post office opened in 1814. Batavia became an incorporated village in 1857 and later became a city charter city in 1903. In 2013, it merged with neighboring Oneonta to become one municipality. Early business enterprises included tanning barns for leather production and selling soap made from animal fats; running a gristmill that ground cornmeal into flour; supplying goods needed by farmers living around Albany; operating a stagecoach service between Albany and Yonkers; and grain shipping throughCanandaigua Creek on incoming vessels carrying both wheat kernels destined for mills along the way as well as salt pork headed westward across Lake Ontario bound for market in New York City or Boston.
