In 1714, General James Wolfe conquered Canada during the Seven Years' War and established Fort Niagara on the Canadian side of Lake Erie near present-day Buffalo, New York. This led to increased demand for goods from British colonies in North America and helped make Batavia one of the largest commercial centers on Long Island Sound. In 1747, John Small built a gristmill at what is now town center which became one of the early mills in this area. As political unrest escalated throughout much of colonial North America during the mid 18th century, many colonists fled to England or Europe for refuge. Many businesses closed down due to high taxes and stringent regulation by colonial authorities. However, many others such as smallholders continued to operate until around 1800 when statehood was granted to New York State and many local operations ceased completely including those within town limits alone – something that has yetto be duplicated elsewhere in American history! It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by Dutch farmers in 1722 and became known as Batavia after the Dutch Batavia Trading Company's post at that location.
