In 1714-1715, General James Wolfe arrived at Fort Niagara from Canada with an army seeking refuge from France and was met by local residents who welcomed him with open arms. They called him "General Washington". In 1747-1748 John Tryon founded the western wing of the Pennsylvania Colony which included present day Batavia Township on the south side of Cayuga Lake in upstate New York. He named it for his father-in-law's birthplace (now Albany). The Tryon Settlement extended along what is now Ithaca Road between Batavia Creek on the east side and Baldwinsville Creek on the west side today; Tryon Landing was located about three miles north of its current site just north of county line road CR 317 (later NY 707) . There are few records remaining from this time period but evidence suggests that early white settlers also intermarried with Native American populations and some Indian names may have been retained by early European settlers even though they removed most or all of their native culture and language during their stay in America. One such example would be Phebe Wuesthoff whose name has been found among various tribal remains at Tryon Landing dating back to before European contact including tools made from carvings found inside a ancient Mohawk village close to modern Syracuse, New York where she lived prior to her removal with her husband John Chenault during Pontiac's War (1696) In 1802 Rev Nicholas Vanneste came overland via Canandaigua Lakeland as part of his attempt to establish himself as a fur trader following his purchase of land east of Niagara Falls from Susquehanna River Indians led by Tecumseh Sherman .
