Batavia was a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The first European settlers in this region were French colonists who founded what is now Batavia on December 12, 1624 as a trading post along the Dutch River. The name derived from the word "batavia" meaning "a place where bats can be found." This site became an important fur trade center because it had abundant natural resources such as wood and coal. In 1736, the British conquered New Netherland and renamed it Canada after their king George II of Great Britain. Batavia's commercial importance diminished during this time but it continued to be an important cultural center with its own newspapers and schools until 1825 when it lost its municipal charter. In 1827, Josephus Nott bought a tract of land in present-day Batavia which he named for his father-in-law John Adams Nott (1762-1837). After purchasing the land from the Indian tribe by gift, Nott began developing it into a town that would become home to many copper miners and their families. He also built several homes for himself and started construction on what would eventually become one of Buffalo's most famous landmarks – the first courthouse in America - which opened in 1829. Batavia experienced some growth during its early years but eventually fell behind other towns in terms of development due to economic factors such as high taxes and limited access to outside assistance. However, through hard work and determination over many years, Nott's community slowly regained its prominence as a successful small business town throughout much of the 19th century. Its fortunes changed once again starting around World War I when new technology came ashore looking for new markets for goods produced overseas; this led to increased manufacturing activity that transformed Batavia into one of North America's leading industrial centers during this period. By 1925 however, conditions had deteriorated so much that Nott decided to sell his town piecemeal to various developers; these developments never achieved significant success thanks to lingering problems with crime and infrastructure maintenance combined with competition from larger cities across Northeast America at this time.
