Batavia was a small town in the Catskill Mountains located about 25 miles north of Scranton, Pennsylvania. The post office at Batavia was established on March 12, 1824, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on May 15, 1975. The population of Batavia peaked at just over 1,000 in 1920 and declined to fewer than 100 by 1940. However, the small community continued to thrive through the years due to its strong agricultural economy and its location close to major highways. In recent years, however, the community has slowly lost its residents and ceased to exist as an active cultural center. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Batavia were Native Americans who called the area Saponi-hatta (meaning "place where there is a lot of canoes"). The first European settlers arrived in 1776 when Captain John Smith discovered land that would later become Batavia Township. At that time there were only a few scattered farmsteads within present-day Batavia Township. By 1800, however, many farms had been erected and developers began purchasing land for development. One such developer was Benjamin Franklin Wright who purchased approximately one hundred acres of land southwest of present-day Batavia from John Doherty in 1810. Wright built his first home on this property which he named Wrightstown after himself and his son Benjamin Franklin Wright II (1792-1870). He also founded the village of North Batavia on this tract of land which he served as mayor from 1811 until his death in 1830. In 1825, General Lafayette visited America and toured Canada before traveling down into New York State where he landed at Albany on January 12th via ferryboat with his army's First Brigade under Major General Sir Henry Clinton. Upon landing at Albany Castle Ferry pier across from today's downtown core – then part of Seneca Lake – Lafayette proceeded directly upstate towards what is now batavianville located between Saratoga Road east along Interstate 87 South/West exit ramp onto Route 22 northeastward past today's Livingston Manor Cemetery towards today's Buffalo Grove Cemetery; thence along route 22 northwestward past today’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church boulder field cemetery towards what is now Broad Street east off I-87 south/west exit ramp onto Route 8 northbound; thence Broadway Avenue northeasterly all the way to what is now Main Street west off I-87 south/west exit ramp onto US 20 southbound neartoday's Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) campus). Batavia was first settled by Dutch colonists in the early 16th century. The town was named after the Batavian Republic, a Dutch colony in present-day Belgium. The town's first church was built in 1564, and it became a center for religious beliefs and trade. In 1795, the town passed from Dutch to British control and was renamed Batavia North. It served as a military base during the American Revolution and remained under British rule until 1949. After independence, Batavia became an important commercial center with a large population of Indian Americans. It is now a heritage-rich community located within the city of Albany, New York.
