When the early Batavia settlers arrived in 1795, they were met with hostility from the local Mohawk tribe. The natives had a long history of raiding and pillaging through the area, so the new arrivals were understandably nervous about their potential interactions with the tribe. Fortunately, there was one man who set out to make things right: George Washington. After serving as President of the United States in 1789-1793, Washington resolved to protect American settlers in New York State by establishing a frontier fort at Fort Niagara on Lake Ontario. In order to finance this project, he authorized issuance of U.S. currency made payable in Continental Currency (i.e., British Pounds) instead of Indian Notes. This change allowed Americans to purchase goods and services not only from Native Americans but also from other English colonists living east of Hudson's Bay Company lands (i.e., Canada). The first gunfire at Fort Niagara took place on October 14, 1795 when American militiamen attacked an Iroquois village less than two miles away from the fortifications. This firearm consisted of a long tube with a hammer on one end and an ammunition clip on the other end. This weapon was manufactured between 1868 and 1875 and saw widespread use in American military service during World War I (1914-18). With its revolving cylinder and 10 round magazine, it became popular among soldiers for its ability to fire multiple rounds per minute. Additionally, it had a strong reputation for accuracy due to its use of brass bullets instead of lead rounds. The popularity of this weapon led to it being produced in high numbers by Colt himself until its discontinuation in 1903. Nevertheless, it remains one of the most well-known firearms ever created and continues to be used today by various militaries around the world

Batavia, New York is a small town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–New York Metropolitan Area. The village of Batavia was founded in 1814 by George Washington Cadwallader and his wife Anna Cadwallader Grant. The Village of Batavia first began to thrive as a center for industry and commerce during the early 1800s with its location on the shores of Lake Ontario providing excellent access to raw materials and markets around the world. By 1840, however, what had been an agricultural community had turned into a busy market town with several mills and businesses located along Main Street. The arrival of railroads in the late 19th century helped spur development throughout Batavia with many new homes being built near railroad tracks. After years of growth and economic prosperity, however, the village lost much of its market edge thanks to rising prices for transportation commodities such as oil and natural gas. However, through aggressive marketing techniques and investment in infrastructure such as roads and schools that remain today, Batavia has regained some measure of its former glory over recent years.
The Dutch colony of Batavia was founded in 1624 by Hendrick van Rensselaer and the rest of the investors from New Netherland. The area now known as Batavia was first inhabited by the Lenape people, who were forced to move west after their land was confiscated by the Dutch. In 1635, a group of settlers led by Cornelis de Hoopman founded a small town named Goffeldorp on what is now Batavia Street in the heart of the city. In 1645, Van Rensselaer granted permission to establish a military fort at present-day Rotterdam Bay to protect against Portuguese attacks. The Fort Orange was built on an artificial island in Rotterdam Bay and became one of the largest European warships during its time. The town of Batavia grew up around it and gradually become an important center for trade and industry. It prospered until it was destroyed by a fire in 1795.
