Until the early 1800s, firearms were a rarity in Batavia, New York. The town was founded by Dutch colonists in 1624 and was known as the "Second City of the Netherlands." Firearms were not widely used until after the Revolutionary War because they were expensive to build and maintain. However, handguns and rifles became popular after the Revolution and Batavia quickly became one of the leading gun-making towns in America. The first rifle that was built in Batavia came from a German immigrant named Johann Georg Schleicher. He imported two guns into the town on October 25, 1795. These rifles were made with black walnut stocks and had single shot triggers. The first pistols that are known to have been manufactured in Batavia were called "Savage pistols." They consisted of a stock with a raised trigger guard and an octagon barrel thatisted at 3 feet 8 inches long. These pistols cost $5 each when new (in 1803). In 1812, John Cushing organized a company called "Cushing & Co.," which manufactured rifles for sale to privateers. This company is now known as Browning Arms Corporation. In 1814–1815, three cannons were imported into Batavia from Holland by Gouverneur Morrissey (the United States Secretary of State under James K Polk). These cannons became very popular for artillery purposes because they could fire over 6 rounds per minute without reloading! The Dahlgren shotgun that we know today originated from this period of history too; it was patented on February 2nd, 1855 by Nicholas Dahlgren (a Swede who immigrated to America in 1820). After the American Civil War ended in 1865, several thousand assault rifles and shotguns went off- shelves throughout America due to prohibition laws enacted during Reconstruction Periods post-war years. At its peak during World War II, Batavia had a population of over 100 people; however, most residents left during or after the war because of wartime shortages in goods and services available in ruralNew York State.
