TheBatavian Rifle Factory was founded in 1827, and soon produced rifles for the American Revolution. In 1828, the Batavia Academy was established to educate local children in reading, writing, arithmetic, science, and morality. In 1830-31, the Batavia Canal was constructed to provide irrigation water to the town. In 1836-37, a steamship company called “The Nanticoke” arrived in Batavia from England with goods for New York City. The town quickly became known as the "Gateway of Trade" for its role in shipping goods between New York City and Albany.
Batavia is a town in the Mohawk Valley region of New York, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–New Rochelle, NY-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Batavia were French traders and missionaries who landed in 1609 on the east coast of Manhattan Island. In 1615, Peter Stuyvesant founded New Netherland as a proprietary colony in what is now Albany County, New York after successfully defending his land against an attack by the Dutch. In 1764, when George Washington's army invaded New York during the American Revolution, Batavia was one of several settlements in upstate New York that sided with the British Crown. The town surrendered unconditionally on July 27th and remained under military occupation for weeks until it was finally evacuated on October 10th. The area that currently comprises Batavia was originally inhabited by Algonquian people who lived near present-day Saratoga Springs and Auburn Hills. The first European settler arrived in what is now Batavia in 1609 when French traders and missionaries landed from Quebec City aboard ship "République" on Manhattan Island. Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette visited this area around 1599 and noted there were many villages or towns along both sides of the Hudson River where Indians dwelt before he reached Albany Province (now Ontario) by way of Kingston Ferry on September 1st 1598/9 alone; he named these places La Nouvelle Hollande (the new Holland). He also noted several small lakes nearby which may have been connected to Indian waters through underground channels." Benedictus van der Donck , an experienced explorer who had accompanied Admiral Cornelisz Verhaegh during his expedition to explore North America discovered a large body of water off shore known as Staten Island while sailing southwestward between Long Island and Manhattan on December 12th 1715 while looking for any possible sources of fresh water for his fleet commanded by admiral Maurice de la Motte . Commodore Nicholas Palliser had earlier sailed downriver from Weehawken upon hearing about this discovery while exploring disputed territory south of Staten Island via boat from Fort Nassau . Palliser believed that this body could be one such source since there seemed to be no outlet available for all the seawater flowing into Staten Island from other parts of Queens Bay . After consulting with others aboard his flagship , La Amistad , Palliser decided not to pursue further exploration but instead return upstream along current routes hoping to find another outlet for their navy's growing thirst for freshwater.. A totalof five days later he sighted a long island extending into open bay northeast cornering Bulls Head Light House bearing hence its name; it would eventually be named StatenIsland after General Jameson’s purchase thereof early 18th century….. By chance Captain John Smith also encountered this same object while sailing southeastward past Gravesend Harbor between Sandy Hook Light House And White Sands Reef On November 2516 – some four months after De Ruyter’s Expedition…. [It] offered perfect opportunity for someone ashore *to plant crops* without getting wet*…." These initial efforts did little good because only intermittent rain continued throughout winter making navigation treacherous… Active trade took place with Native Americans living near present day Niagara Falls but goods never reach market due lack of transportation…. Eventually English colonists began settling here as well…." In 1764 Gouverneur Morris established what becameNiagara Falls as part of his plan to make Westchester County more populated so that troops could be stationed there protectionally during times when Canada trembled under French invasion plans….. At about this time two men came overland from Canada trading goods with local natives…… One called himself Pierre Charles L'Enfant …He soon married one Mary Hunter who bore him six children including L’Enfant's namesake Patrick Joseph Saint Laurent whose father also served as Mayor Of Paris From 1847 To 1870″ This accounts leads us backtraceing our ancestor thru three families: Le Moyne family (-1660), Van Dyke family (+1764), & Saint Laurent family (+1847). Finally we come backtrackin’ thru Obando family (-1800), Apostolopoulos (-1867), & Sideropoulos (−1914) all smack dab inside our tree!

Batavia, New York is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to enter what is now Batavia were French fur traders led by Pierre-Olivier Conte and Nicolas de Champlain in 1624. They named the place "Haïti" after the island of Hainault off the coast of France. In 1625, Samuel Sylvester and Jacob Leisler founded a trading post on an armory hill called "Savage" (now within Batavia). In 1629, Dutch colonists arrived from Utrecht with three ships and set up a permanent settlement at what is now Batavia. The Dutch name for their new community was "Nieuw Amsterdam". In 1714/15, English traders arrived from Rhode Island with 3 ships and named their new post "New Amsterdam." The English renamed it "Batavia," after its capital city of Holland. The town continued to be called Batavia until 1845 when it became part of Saratoga County. The first school in Batavia was built in 1792 by Coles & Company as a one-room schoolhouse on First Street near where he had been trading since 1595. A second school was built in 1805 and enlarged in 1826 by James Kappeler & Company; this building still stands today as the old Courthouse Annex building (renamed Rensselaer Polytechnic University Campus). A third school opened in 1840 by Joice Mott & Company as the Village School on Broadway between Third and Fourth Streets; this building also still stands today as part of Rensselaer Polytechnic University's Main Campus buildings south side Extension Avenue between Easton Road (now State Route 2) and Fifth Avenue North - currently known as Court House Square or Ellis Building housing most Student Affairs offices etc.. A fourth school opened in 1844 by Nicholas Applegate & Company as Academy Hill School; this building still remains today next door to Elmira Rural High School across from Askern Park located east off Route 9 north of Ithaca NY
Batavia, New York was a small town in the Chenango Valley of upstate New York. It developed around a trading post on the west bank of the Chenango River, and was founded by Dutch colonists in 1624. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century, reaching its peak in 1762 with a population of about 1,500. However, it declined during the 19th century due to contraction of the local economy and military occupation by United States forces. In 1955, Batavia was merged into Dutchess County.
