By 1800, Babylon had over 10,000 residents and functioned as a commercial center for eastern Long Island Sound area via waterways such as the Hudson River and Mohawk River watersheds southward into central New York State beyond Kingston Landing on Lake Ontario about 20 miles east-northeast of modern Albany
