Bethlehem Steel located their first plant there before moving their factory to nearby Scranton/Wilkes-Barre decades later.) The population increased from 1,000 in 1830 to 6,500 by 1840; 12,000 by 1850; 24,000 by 1870; 50,000 by 1890; 100,000 by 1910). By 1930 over 150 companies had established themselves at Babylon with 2 million dollars worth of product exported annually ($10 million today). Among these were Bethlehem Steel Company (), American Can Company (), General Electric Company (), Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy’s Department Store (), Progressive Insurance Company (); Goodyear Tire & Rubber (); JBL Audio Incorporated (); Coca Cola Refreshments (); United States Rubber industry ()); Hormel Foods Corporation ()and many others. Today nearly all major employers are headquartered outside the Greater Buffalo metropolitan area but some significant businesses include McKesson Health Care Services (), Allstate Insurance Companies (), First Niagara Financial Group ()and AmerisourceBergen Corporation ().
