However, recent redevelopment has brought renewed life to Babylon and it now enjoys a strong economy based largely on professional services, biomedical research, education, tourism and retail businesses such as locally owned stores and restaurants

The city of Babylon fell to Darius I of Persia in 486 BC, but regained control under his son Xerxes I in 330 BC. After that it declined gradually until its fall to Muslim rule in 1055 AD.
