The Smith and Wesson Company was founded by Samuel Colt and Isaac Brockman, who purchased a rifle from Judge John Swenzer. In 1824, General James Wilkinson established a gun store on Main Street. That year, Colt exported guns to Russia for the tsar Nicholas I. By 1829, Colt had developed his revolver and began selling it throughout Great Britain. In 1830, Wilkinson opened a second store on Second Avenue in downtown Babylon. The following year, he became proprietor of the entire business. By 1835, Wilkinson's stores were operating at two locations: one on State Street (now Franklin Square) and another on Fourth Avenue opposite City Hall (now York Square). Gun sales increased in this period as American colonists prepared for war with Mexico. To keep up with demand, Wilkinson introduced new designs and colors of arms including blueprints for pistols that bore resemblance to Spanish cannons. In 1836-37, Winchester Arms Company acquired most of Wilkinson's stock and continued to operate under its own name until 1840 when they merged into Colt & Co., Ltd.. This company continued manufacturing handguns until 1865 when it merged into National Firearms Corporation which then merged into Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms) in 1974

In 1847, Samuel Colt patented his own revolving revolver design called the Colt Peacemaker. This firearm could be fired either with one hand or two hands, making it more versatile than earlier muzzleloaders. The Peacemaker became popular among law enforcement officers, who could use it to shoot multiple rounds at once without having to reload often. In 1852, John Brown & Co., manufacturers of firearms in London started producing handguns using an improved version of Colt's revolving revolvers called Model 1865 Navy Arms pistols. These pistols had metal frames instead of wood and had heavier barrels than earlier designs. They were also much more accurate than other firearms because they used a different type of ammunition designed for military use called Ballistite ammunition which helped improve accuracy over time
