The site has been used for archaeological research since 1859 CE when James Fenton discovered a series of cylinder seals dating back to 2400 BC that he called “the most important discovery ever made at Babylonia” due to their antiquity and potential significance for understanding ancient Near Eastern trade routes. Excavations have revealed considerable evidence for agriculture, industry, trade, religious beliefs, artistry,and palaces throughout both periods; however, few artifacts date beyond the Early Modern Period itself.
