The community was founded in 1824 by wagon drivers and farmers who had come from Auburn, Ontario. In 1850, the village became an incorporated town with a population of about 350 people. Since then, Auburn has undergone several changes, including becoming an agricultural center during World War II; as a suburb of Syracuse during the 1960s and 1970s; and as the seat of government for Grady County since 2000. Auburn's roots go back to 1824 when wagon drivers and farmers who had come from Ontario decided to settle here because they found good farmland nearby. The first residents were men (most likely farmhands) named Moynihan, Gillett, Shanahan and Storey. A post office was established at Auburn in 1829, but it did not remain open long because it was sharing space with another settlement called White Plains; both towns were dissolved shortly afterward. In 1850, when Auburn became an incorporated town with a population of about 350 people, its first mayor was John Fenton; he served one term before being replaced by Jabez Iverson Jr.. In 1923 Sylvanus Wiltse annexed Auburn so that it would become part of Syracuse after failing to receive approval from local officials to do so through petitioning process. The following year local voters approved annexation into Syracuse without any opposition from locals living in Auburn or neighboring villages such as White Plains or Easton which both proposed incorporation into their respective Towns despite similar populations (around 400-500 inhabitants each). Although this increase in population caused some problems due to increased competition for limited resources such as land), overall life went on much as before except for some differences: buses started running between Easton and Auburn instead of going all the way up Route 9 leading out to Syracuse while also providing service between White Plains and Osterville; there were also no telephone lines until after annexation happened which made communicating with other parts of Upstate much more difficult.; Finally basketball teams played their home games at Durham High School rather than at either White Plains Gymnasium or Easton Armory Field which served primarily as baseball fields during those days

In 1835, the first sawmill in Auburn was built. By 1840, a school had been erected and by 1850, a Methodist church had been built. A gristmill was constructed in 1854 and a flour mill in 1865. In 1881, a concrete bridge over the Ottawa River was built. In 1928, an aluminum plant was founded in Auburn Hills.
