In 1825, John M. Stevens built the first sawmill in Auburn, New York. The milling of lumber became a major industry in the town and by 1850, there were five sawmills operating in Auburn. In 1907, the first automobile was built in Auburn and soon after, the town began to become known as the "car capital of America." The mills closed during World War II but reopened several years later when war production decreased. By 1973, all five mills were shuttered again due to economic decline. However, they reopened in 1987 as part of a larger re-branding for the town as "Auburn's Technology Capital." Today, Auburn's primary industries are manufacturing (including auto parts), information technology and professional services. Auburn has a rich history dating back to 1792 when it was founded as a trading post by subscription among men from various settlements along the river. In 1814, General Alexander Hamilton's army invaded and captured Auburn while they were marching through the area to invade Canada. Afterward, General George Washington appointed Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson as its first Postmaster and made him head of all postal activities in Monroe County. In 1825, local farmers formed a village called Auburn under the guidance of Reverend David Whitehead who had been their pastor for many years before that. Reverend Whitehead provided social services such as education, health care and religious instruction to his villagers until his death in 1829 at the age of 82 years old. In 1830, Representative Augustus Thornton met with representatives from Schenectady and Albany to discuss forming a new state out of what was then consideredupstate New York; this meeting resulted inthe formation ofthe New York State Legislature at Auburn on January 15th 1830 which included Representatives From Schenectady And Albany As Well As Mr Thornton Himself! The community continued to thrive due to its location along Highway 12 (now US 11) and nearby forests which allowed for easy access to goods brought downriver by boats or Railroads during their early years! In 1850-1851 there was an attempted flood which destroyed most buildings but did not damage any mills or crops! In 1862 YankeeGeneral Nathaniel Banks crossed over into New York State from Canada near Kingston Ontario duringThe American Civil War Pursuing His Confederate Plan To Occupy& Destroy ALL THE STATES IN AMERICA Including NY!! In 1865 after Yankees got word that Rebel soldiers were entrenched around Syracuse they began bombardarding everything within range!! This caused extensive damage including 3 churches , numerous homes & stores !! But even more importantly it destroyed much important agricultural land Which Would eventually lead To The Town achieving Its current Name Of Auburn Upon Hearing About This Event From A Local Farmer

Auburn, New York is a small town in Livingston County, New York, United States. The population was 5,529 at the 2010 census. Auburn had a post office from 1824 to 1865 and from 1889 to 1905. The first settler in Auburn was Jonas Winchester who arrived in 1792. The town was platted in 1835 by John Tappan and others under the name of "Winchester." In 1837 it became part of the USA as part of the Compromise of 1850 which divided New York into two parts. Auburn lay within Albany County and lost its status as a town when that county was merged into Chenango County in 1861. In 1870, an act created Fulton Township within Livingston County and made Auburn a part of that township; however, it retained its own post office until 1925. The first school in Auburn was opened in 1825 by Mrs. Anna Ladd with three pupils; it continued operation until1836 when it moved to Peekskill due to floods on the Susquehanna River caused by heavy rains during winter season. A gristmill was built near what is now downtown Auburn around 1840-45 by Timothy Houghton and operated until 1862 when it burned down; this mill left behind some evidence including a Nowak flintlock rifle still extant today at 210 Main Street (now enterprising artist's studio). In 1847 James Fenton organized what is now known as the Solidarity Society which performed acts of kindness for local farmers during economic hard times such as crop failures or bad weather periods unknown to those living then; these activities helped make up for many social deficiencies feltthen such as lack of education or hygiene among rural residents The town's first store opened on December 3, 1851 at 304 Elmira Road by Wm Baily who also operated a tannery there for several years before selling his interest to Asa Sprague in 1860. Auburn, New York was first settled in 1785 by John and Mary McCullough. The McCulloughs were among the early pioneers of Auburn, moving from Ireland to this area in search of a better life. They had two children, John and Jane McCullough, who both helped their father farm the land. In 1812, the McCulloughs sold their land to Eli Whitney for $8 per acre. He developed it into what is now known as Whitney Park. The town growth began slowly but surely after Eli Whitney's death in 1828. Many young men and women followed his footsteps to found new businesses and homes in Auburn. One such business pioneer was George Washington Cranch, who opened a grocery store at 26 Broad Street in 1830. By 1840, there were over 100 businesses operating in Auburn with a population of 3100 residents!
