Auburn is one of two towns in Onondaga County that are both home to Cornell University and its largest campus, Ithaca College. The other town is Geneva. The first Europeans to visit Auburn were French traders in 1624. In 1722, John Armstrong arrived at Auburn with his family from Montreal and founded the first trading post in what is now Onondaga County. In 1814, General Henry Dearborn's army invaded Canada and marched through Onondaga County on their way to Battle of Powell's Ford against Native American forces near Binghamton. The battle ended with a victory for Dearborn and his troops over the Native Americans and marked the beginning of what would become known as the "Great War" between Great Britain and America. Dearborn decided to build a military fort at Auburn while he was still in Canada, but it was not completed until after his return to America in 1825. When Dearborn died in 1827, his son Augustus became president of United States under President James Kansa (1829-1830). Avery Mankin served as mayor of Auburn from 1903 until 1951; he remains an agricultural historian who has written extensively about local farming practices throughout history

Auburn, New York is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. Auburn is part of the Rochester–Monroe Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1794 by Nicholas Biddle and has been consolidated with neighboring towns since 1802. Auburn was originally known as "Angeline" after the French princess who married George Washington. Auburn is one of only two communities in Monroe County to have its own post office (the other being Canandaigua). It began receiving mail from Rochester on October 14, 1795 and continued doing so until December 15, 1899. On July 1, 1802, the community merged with nearby villages of Ontario and Freeport to form the new borough of Auburn; this merger became effective on January 1, 1903. In 1907 it amalgamated with another village (Penn Yan) to form what is now called Canandaigua Borough; this merger also became effective on January 1, 1903. The first school in Auburn was built on Main Street in 1794-95 by Nicholas Biddle and his son Johnathan Biddle. In 1802-03 the community's first school building burned down but Anthony Farnsworth built a new schoolhouse which he used until 1902 when it caught fire again and he had to rebuild again using local donations and labour from his employees at his businesses in Canandaigua and Ontariotown which were then part of Auburn Community School District No 2; this second school building still stands today across from where Main Street once stood between West Seventh Street/Route 20 & Elmhurst Avenue - becoming an historical landmark within our small town! AUBURN HISTORY: The Town of Auburn was organized December 5th [1802] by act of Congress under the name “Angeline” after Princess Marie Antoinette de France who had married George Washington[1]. The name change came about because Angeline’s original home [Canandaigua] had been destroyed by a fire that same year. The township encompassed present day Monroe County as well as parts of Chenango County[2]. On February 11th [1806], through an act entitled An Act for organization of Townships within said county[3], it was determined that there should be a Township hereabouts named “Auburn” due to its importance economically both before & after unification with ChenangoCounty[4]. Henceforth we know all good citizens are reminded to always give their old motto – "Let us be true to our names"[5]; for many years “Auburnites” would take great pride in wearing either “auburn or orange color clothing while attending public events or participating in social affairs outside their homes” even if they happened to live some miles away from their ancestral home! For over 100 years residents have proudly worn their Town colors - red & white! On October 14th [1795], One Hundred Years Ago... AUBURN COMMUNITY PRESENTATION: In honor of one hundred years since our incorporation into the Village Of Albionburgh,[6] we would like to presentto you our beautifulTown Hall brick structure located just east off Route 20 near Park Road/Old Center road junction etc., which served as our Primary School starting back around 1800!!! This building still stands today thanks largely to donations received during various special occasions throughout its lifespan such as monster truck rallies etcetera!!! We hope you enjoy!!
