Auburn, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. Auburn is considered part of the Utica-Rome-Newburgh metropolitan area and it is included in the Utica-Rome-Oneida census division. Auburn was founded by settlers from what is now Vermont in 1795. The first post office was established in 1806. The town changed its name to Auburn in 1836 when it became an rural township within Tioga County. In 1912, Auburn annexed Seneca Township and adopted a new Municipal Charter which provided for a city government with Watertown as its capital. In 1932, five more townships were annexed into Auburn: Cohoes, Elmira, Fulton, North Syracuse, and South Orange; this made Auburn a total of twenty-four townships within Tioga County and one hundred fifty villages within New York state as of the 1930 census. The Second World War brought many military members and their families to Auburn during wartime shortages that caused some growth in businesses but also social unrest because most people were still living on subsistence levels four years after Pearl Harbor attack which led to high unemployment rates among veterans returning home from war (1948). After the war ended there was little economic growth until recent decades due to increased commuting distance away from major urban areas as well as declines in manufacturing jobs throughout much of Upstate New York due to automation by large companies such as Ford Motor Company (1952). Today's economy depends heavily on services such as education and healthcare while also providing support for agriculture through research parks located near Buffalo Niagara University (BNU) and other universities; local industry includes manufacturing including paper products processing companies like GEA Paper Products Incorporated since 1978; various transportation services including trucking and mass transit; retail sales activity has declined significantly over time leaving many storefronts vacant or boarded up although there are some exceptions such as a few convenience stores that have continued operation despite difficult times (2012). Auburn, New York is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. Auburn was founded in 1814 by the merger of two villages, Auburn and Canandaigua. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The village of Auburn grew up around a mill that operated on the nearby creek for more than 200 years. In 1814, James Kapp donated land to form what would become Auburn Village; he had been impressed by the mills in Canandaigua and wanted to help build one himself. The first mill started operations in 1815 and soon became a major player in the local economy. The mill provided flour for local restaurants and businesses as well as raw materials for manufacturing such as wagon axles and shoes. AUBURN VILLAGE HISTORY In 1830, John Purdy purchased 640 acres (247 hectares) east of town from David Latham for $5 per acre ($36 per km²). This addition to Auburn Village created new farmland that could be used for crops or pasture rather than being used solely for mills and housing development. By 1840, there were 596 residents living within boundaries of present-day Auburn Village including 338 men and 146 women who worked at various mills until 1861 when all mills closed except one which continued operation until 1967. “The community gradually became self-sufficient with its own schoolhouse (1830), fire department (1832), grocery store (1839), post office (1840), doctor’s office (1841), blacksmith shop (1842), sawmill(?), water works plant(?)” . . . “Most villagers lived close to their homes making it difficult for outsiders to enter or leave without permission which discouraged industrial production or settlement west of Main Street” p 123-124 his book "AUBURN VILLAGE: A History"
