Auburn, New York is a village in Putnam County, New York, United States. The population was 2,657 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–New Rochelle, NY-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Auburn Village is on the south side of Auburn Pond and south of I-390 on exit 15 eastbound to Utica. The first permanent settler in Auburn was Ebenezer Horton in 1814. A post office called Auburn was established in 1825 and remained open until 1850. In 1830, a store and mill were built nearpresent day I-390 and US Route 9 north of town. The first school in Auburn was built in 1833 by teacher Catharine Goode (1809-68). The first church was built in 1835 by Rev John Butler (1793-1860). In 1860, there were only three residents living within original town limits when it became part of Syracuse City; however, by 1870 the population had grown to over 1,000 people thanks to new development around the pond as well as industry along US Routes 9 and 11 west of town. By 1880 there were twelve businesses with one hundred employees operating out of four churches located downtown: First Methodist Church (founded 1865), Presbyterian Episcopal Church (founded 1865), Baptist Church (founded 1865), and Congregationalist Chapel (founded 1865). A local grain elevator opened its doors for business in 1916 which led to increased trade with other nearby villages such as Utica which also possessed elevators at that time. In 1924 an addition to downtowns churches were added - First Baptist Church & Worship Center on Main Street between Broadway and Third Avenue while Second Presbyterian Churches moved into their present location on Elm Street adjacent to I-390 just after dark on Halloween night 1926 due fear that vandalism would occur during trick or treating festivities associated with that holiday season trends then considered child molestation activities punishable by law up then vs now where those penalties are not generally enforced even though studies have shown that rates for child molestation have decreased nationally since enactment of laws prohibiting such offenses did take effect here at least five years ago .
