Auburn, New York is a small town in upstate New York, located about 20 miles northeast of Rochester. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Auburn is one of the few places in Upstate New York without any incorporated villages or towns. The town's only street is Main Street. The first residents of Auburn were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624 and named it "Augsburg." The name was changed to Auburn after General John Forbes' invasion of Canada in 1759 and his campaign against the Iroquois Confederacy. In 1814, James River Bridge was built across the south branch of the Genesee River near what would later become downtown Auburn. That year, local residents voted to incorporate as a village and became known as "Auburn." In 1872, local Assemblyman John Larkin proposed that the village be merged with nearby Rochester because they had both been established within a short distance of each other by then-Governor Nelson Rockefeller. Larkin's proposal passed unanimously but no action was taken until 1908 when Assemblyman David Levy introduced legislation to merge Auburn with Rochester without consulting its citizens. This plan passed both houses and became law on July 1, 1908. AUBURN - A Village At Its Best! It’s hard not to feel like you live in an old timey movie when driving through town – everything seems so quaint and historic! However, this charming upstate New York community really did take shape over several centuries ago - beginning with descendants of Dutch colonists who came here as early as 1624! And even though today’s Auburndale Residents may seem pretty vanilla compared to their forebears back then (many still use English words incorrectly), there are plenty of interesting storiesbehind our beautiful hometownscape! To start off: One very special aspect that sets our village apart from others is that it has always been governed by an elected body called “the Board Of Trustees”! This group consists mostly of current or former residents who are responsible for all aspects OF life within our walls… including public safety (like keeping checks on our drinking water!), zoning/building regulations, trash collection & more! Crazy huh? Well we just went through some really tough times recently – thanks again to Albany legislators trying TO take away OUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES *COUGH* ! But don’t worry – we have new leadership now that will do everything possible To stay afloat& make sure ALL OF OUR COMMUNITY feels police Chief material 😁 ;-) Even though many people might think this type of governing system can be kinda boring sometimes (especially if things aren’t going well), I believe THAT THIS SYSTEM WORKS REALLY WELL IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THE PEACE & QUALITY OF LIFE FOR EVERYBODY IN OUR COMMUNITY :-) So go ahead & say hello to your new(ish) Mayor while you still can 🙂
Auburn, New York is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chenango County. The first people to live in Auburn were the Seneca Indians who arrived in 1779. They built a small fort on an island in the river and traded with other tribes. In 1807, General George Washington and his army marched through Chenango County and passed through Auburn on their way to battle against British forces near Albany. When they left, some of the Indian survivors traveled north to Canada where they started a new tribe known as the Ojibwe. In 1821, Judge James Ketchum sold land east of Auburn to Hiram Bingham for $1,000 cash and 10 acres of land for every family that moved into it. The village of Auburn was founded by Bingham on December 15th of that year with seven homes and twenty-five families living there initially. He named it after his home town in England which he had visited while traveling back home during that time period. Bingham spent many years building up Auburn until he died in 1872 at age 86 years old from natural causes at his farmstead located southeast of town along Buffalo Creek just west of Route 219 off State Route 9A (nowRoute 212).
