Auburn, New York is a town in Chenango and Wayne counties in the U.S. state of New York. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. Auburn is one of the oldest towns in Chenango County and has been inhabited by people since 1792. The town was platted on December 6, 1824, by Nicholas Bingham and others as part of the original border between Chenango and Ontario Counties. In 1836, when Chenango County became a part of New York State, Auburn continued to be a part of Ontario County until it was annexed into Chenango County in 1854. On November 3rd, 1893, Auburn had its first election as an incorporated town charter with thirty-six residents voting against incorporation because they felt that too much power would be vested in the township board over their own lives and liberties. Auburn quickly grew as a commercial center due to its location near water supplies and railroad lines. In 1911, the opening of the Erie Canal made Auburn an important transportation hub for settlers moving westward into what is now Pennsylvania and Ohio. Auburn, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The population was 3,589 at the 2010 census. Auburn is located on the east side of the Mohawk River and is bounded by Waterford to the north, Auburn to the south, and Geneva to the west. The town was first settled in 1786 by Revolutionary War veterans from Long Island who had come downriver as troops for General George Washington. In 1811, a group of local farmers organized themselves into a village under the name of Auburn because they could not find a place to call their own. The village grew rapidly due to its location and easy access to water rights on both sides of the river. By 1840, there were more than 100 residents in Auburn. Auburn became an incorporated municipality in 1851 and soon afterward began rapid growth through commercial development and agricultural production. A sawmill was built in 1854 and soon became one of America's largest producers of lumber; other important businesses included two banks (1860-1867), three stores (1870-1901), four teachers' academies (1892-1905), two churches (1900-1906), four fire departments (1910-1920), five schools (1912-1963), six factories (1920s-1960s) and fifteen farms (1920). During World War II, many manufacturing plants operated within or close by Auburn; these include Hudnut Corporation's Paper Products Division until it closed in 1967, United States Rubber Company until it merged with USI Corporation in 1961, Allis Chalmers Corporation until it closed in 1968, American Cheese Incorporated until it shut down in 1979 as part as part of a national cheese industry consolidation., Rochester Air Ambulance Service which served local hospitals until 1985 when that service was transferred to nearby Haverstraw Town Hospital., numerous mutual aid societies including American Legion Post No. 158 which erected a monument commemorating its contributions during World War II (), several golf courses such as Deer Lake Golf Club established between 1922 and 1933 (), several tennis courts () Additionally, Auburn has been home to several professional sports teams throughout its history including baseball (.500 winning percentage over 150 games played before 1930) football (.445 winning percentage over 150 games played before 1930) ice hockey (.813 winning percentage over 50 games played before 1970) basketball (.769 winning percentage over 50 games played before 1970) rugby union (); also home are various type of recreational opportunities such as golfing (), fishing (), hiking (), swimming ()
