The following night they found four bodies inside one of the homes; all had been killed with shots from a rifle or shotgun. At first suspicion fell on local kids who had been playing around when they discovered the bodies but later it was revealed that one resident — John Hargrave — had fled to Canada before authorities could arrive and committed suicide by shooting himself in the head minutes after reporting what he had seen.
