In 1834, John Amity and his wifeCatharine Payne Amity established the town of Amityville on land they had purchased from Native Americans. The community grew rapidly, reaching 2,000 people by 1840. By 1870, the population had increased to 7,500 people. During the American Civil War (1861-65), Amityville was one of nine towns in western New York that sided with Confederate States forces over Union forces. On October 15, 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewing attacked Union troops at Fort Swenzer in what is now Westchester County; after hours of fighting, Confederate casualties numbered more than 100 dead and wounded while Union losses were estimated at only 10 killed and 20 wounded. On November 11–12th 1861, Confederate General James Longstreet's brigade invaded northern Westchester County during the Battle of Antietam; due to heavy rain and high winds conditions that day, almost all roads leading into or out of Westchester County were impassable; consequently most soldiers marched directly into position near Saratoga Springs where they awaited orders to cross over Federal lines under cover of darkness under heavy fire from Federal artillery batteries positioned on heights surrounding the village. Just before dawn on November 12th 1861 several thousand men emerged from behind some trees around milepost 9 on our current route which leads straight into Federal lines - this became known as "the turning point". Unfortunately for rebel commanders who could not see their enemies coming until too late many units became surrounded and eventually surrendered without success...
