Despite these controversies, the community continued to thrive until 1880 when an earthquake caused extensive damage to both the homes and businesses in the town center. Despite this setback,Amityville continued to grow and expand until 1888 when it merged with neighbouring village Utica into one single municipality under new government regulations called "Staten Island Borough."
