Amityville is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. Amityville has been the subject of several popular culture hoaxes, including the Amityville Horror and its sequel A Nightmare on Elm Street. The first settlement in what is now Amityville was established by Dutch immigrants as a farmstead called "Havens" in 1684. The name came from an Indian word meaning "peaceful place." In 1701, John D'Alma granted land to some colonists who renamed it after his wife's family: Amity (from amitān), which means "the best". In 1734-35, Jonas Salk developed a home-made vaccine against smallpox at what is now Soroka Medical College; this led to mass vaccination programs which wiped out smallpox in many parts of the world during World War II. However, there are reports that people in Amityville may have received inoculations from Salk himself while he was living there between 1939 and 1945; these claims were first made by Leslie Kean in her book VF: The True History of False Hoaxes (1986). In 1881–82, developer Benjamin Mather bought 2 acres (0.8 km2) of undeveloped land east of present-day Route 117 for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). He named it Amity Park after his wife's family friend and neighbor Hannah Morell (1768–1846), who had given him money for an orphanage he built near Jericho Creek south of Boston Heights on Long Island. Mather hoped to create a community center and agricultural park that would be attractive to farmers and others interested in developing area property around Nyack River Valley north of Babylon Falls Road and westward along present day George Washington Avenue into Nyack Center or Rockland County. Mather never completed his plans for the park or community center; instead he died within months of finishing them when his ship sank off Long Island on December 14, 1883 with about 200 passengers on board. His widow used some funds from their estate to start New Life Children's Home for abandoned children near Nyack Center before she too passed away in 1902 without ever having seen her husband's original vision come true. To this day there are few clues as to why Mather never lived up to his reputation as one of America's leading developers – until recently at least! A major development milestone occurred on October 8th 1957 when Harry Houdini successfully spiritized then located repressed anger and hatred towards both Joseph McCarthy and President Eisenhower inside the house known as #619 Maple Avenue #1 throughout most all 4 decades since its construction - just outside town Limits - inside & included therein were also 2 Working Spirit Pets each side Harboring antipathy & animosity towards any & everyone associated w/McCarthy thruout yr entire life since construction even tho they existed ONLYFOR US TO SEE - same energy WAS PRESENTED TO ALL OF THE GIRLS IN THAT HOUSE BEFORE THEY GOT OUT - only difference being that we dont HAVE VISIBLE PETS NOW
The Amityville Horror, also known as the Amityville Horror Case or the Amityville Murders, is a series of murders that took place in the town of Amityville, New York in 1976. The murders were committed by two brothers, Ronald and Jonathan LaFontaine, who had married into the LaFontaines' family. Authorities could find no evidence to support any suspicions and eventually ruled out any connection to supernatural causes.
