Amityville is a village incongruent with the Amityville Horror movie and novel, which was based on the story of the same name. The original Amityville house was built in 1935 by H.L. Mencken and his family, who lived there until 1951 when they sold it to millionaire John O'Neill. In 1978, O'Neill's wife, Kathleen, killed herself and their two children in their home after rumors spread that she had been abused by O'Neill. The Manor House Museum opened in 1984 to exhibit evidence of child abuse at the home during the early 1980s.
