The town of Amityville, New York was founded in 1736 by Captain James Amity. The town quickly became a center for gunsmithing and hunting, and the industry grew to such an extent that it soon outgrew the smalltowns around it. By 1825, the population of Amityville had grown to over 1,000 residents. Gun hammer manufacturing quickly became one of the town's most important businesses. Gun hammers were used to forge firearms and other items from metal. Hammermiths also created various forge tools, such as anvils, tongs, chisels, crowbars, and hammers. In 1842, a Mr. Purdy purchased controlling interest in thehammermaking business from Captain Amity. At this pointhammermaking began to decline in popularity because new technologies had emerged that made forging firearms more efficient and cost effective than using a hammer. Hammermakers turned their attention instead to making other firearm-related tools such as stocks and triggers. However,hammermaking continued to be a major part of the local economy until 1865 when it was discontinued altogether due to decline in demand for forged goods from abroad.

A second school building, which still stands today, was built between 1863 and 1865 by Reverend Ezra Stroud; it served as both an elementary and high school before becoming a daycare center in 1975. In 1878 a fire destroyed most of the original settlement at what is now Amityville; however, a new town organization was formed around this event and renamed for the original pioneers: "New AmITYVILLE." Some of these early residents are buried within modern-dayAmityville including Nicholas Biddle (1825-1879), John Hickey (1827-1850), Joshua Robbins ( 1830-1865), Ezra Stroud ( 1863-1875), Mary Ann Ruddock (baptized November 22nd 1797), James Fenton (1800-1851). A post office called "New AmITYVILLE" opened on July 24th EDT 1865 under mail route No 763 at Old School House #1; its closing occurred on October 15th 1870 due to lack of customers. NEW AMITYVILLE later became part of NYS DOT's White Plains office area with ZIP code 11794 during 2000 revamping of postal boundaries following US Census information release!
