In 1801, John Hickey settled nearby and built a log cabin called "Hickey's Cabin". Hickey would later purchase additional land around it and build four more houses: "Hutchinson's Cabin", "Wright's Cabin", "Moses' House" and "Foster's House". It was during this time that the area became known as Hickey Hill because of these houses. In 1814, George Washington Smith moved into one of these homes and started a small grocery store which still stands today next to the post office on Main Street. Smith also bought some land adjacent to his store for $1 per acre (approximately ). By 1820, Smith had developed a large tract of land south of Amityville where he erected two buildings – one for himself and one for his employees – which remain standing today as part of the University Hall complex. This growth led to increased competition between Smiths and other landowners so Smith constructed a second building – now known as North High School – on Church Road east of Main Street in 1824-25 to better compete with local schools. Unfortunately for Smith, this growth also led to social unrestrained by rules or regulations; within three years both buildings had been destroyed by fire . However despite this instability or irregular behavior from some residents due to economic envy or power struggles amongSmiths themselves; many locals continued to call themselves 'Friendly' even after their businesses failed . Eventually following several lawsuits brought against them by citizens; all six men responsible for building North High School were eventually acquitted . In 1830 Nicholas Cady Jr., grandson of Nicholas Cady Sr., took over running his father's grocery store which continue operating until 1961 when it closed due to financial difficulty One reason why business opportunities dwindled may have been because there were no railroads available near Amityville then (they did come later) so farmers could not easily bring goods into town during harvest season etc.; instead they had to drive miles away .. henceforth only cars brought goods into town while people went out shopping etc.). However, during the late 1960s and early 1970s there was significant growth in crime in Amityville; this led to increased focus on security measures at local businesses andResidents began calling for incorporation into either neighboring municipalities or even nearby Syracuse. On January 17th 1976 - just over one year after incorporation - residents successfully petitioned for cityhood within their existing town limits despite strong opposition from many members of their governing body who argued thatcityhood would only lead to more crime rates in their rural neighbor'sailsortheywerestillpendingforaordentoestablishan urban area withintheirtownlimitsthatwouldcancelthecharterofcityhoodandreturnthemto their rural roots].
