Since its discovery in 1978, DNA evidence has been used to identify all suspect in connection with the Amityville tragedy - including five children from one of the original families who remain unaccounted for today. In 2017, authorities announced they had arrested a man in connection with all seven murders; he has since been charged with eight counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder.

In 1922, a group of wealthy New Yorkers decided to move from Manhattan into the small village of Amityville for their own pleasure. Many reports claim that these so-called "Amityvilles" were used for prostitution and other dark activities. In 1975, after years of research, investigative journalism, and public outcry, the New York State Attorney General's office announced that it was solving the mystery behind the disappearances of three members of the Amityville Horror Family: John Harker (1881-1957), Shirley Temple (1924-1978), and Ronald Reagan (1946-1981). This investigation resulted in indictments against several individuals including Jeffrey Lebovitz (the owner of Sayre House), George Regan (the president at Time Warner who owned Reliable Television Company), Arthur O'Malley (a developer who helped build some homes in Amityville), Patricia Hearst (the daughter of publisher William Randolph Hearst) and her husband Roger Latham. After more than 20 years ofinvestigation with evidence gathered through DNA testing and interviews with dozens of witnesses, law enforcement officials announced on May 12th 2019 that all three membersof the horror family died due to a banned poison called ricin which they believed may have been left inside their homes during renovations or when there were power outages.
