Amityville is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 3,815 at the 2010 census. Amityville is nestled on the border of two towns: Southampton and Nyack. It is bordered by the hamlet of West Nyack to the north, Amityville to the east, and Southampton to the south. The history of Amityville begins with three settlers who bought land in 1784: John Amity, Samuel Titcomb, and Isaac Norris. They built a cabin near what is now Route 12 (now Sunrise Highway) and named their settlement after their house on Long Island which they had seen from their home in Southampton. The original village post office was established in 1811; it changed its name to Amityville in 1868 because of incorporation into Nyack. The first doctor for Amityville was Drury Lewisohn who practiced Medicine Maniacus from 1812-1815; he also opened a school that served as an early training ground for future doctors. In 1820 four more settlers arrived and named themselves Postmaster Plummer; they later became known as Postmasters Purdy and Meadowlake II. In 1830 five more settlers arrived - these were Jonathan Edwards (age 25), James Wolk (age 28), Job Smith (age 33), Solomon Stiles (age 36), and Andrew Morse (aged 37). They all lived together at Oneonta until about 1840 when they moved westward into Putnam County along with many other pioneers during the great western migration period known as "the wild west." In 1850 one more settler called John Burt set up a farmstead just east of where today's Route 12 intersects Sunrise Highway; he called his property "Burt's Corners". In 1861 another settler called Amos Mabee purchased some land east of Route 12 on what would become Park Avenue; he renamed his property "Amity Villa" after his daughter's maiden name which he had obtained from her father only weeks before she married him. After years of growth by these few initial residents, development began within what would become Amityville proper with several stores opening up including Blacksmith shop owned by Aaron Burriss in 1875, Dry Goods store operated by George Romney & Brothers between 1886-1887, grocer Jno.[Joseph] Fenton opened his store at 5 Main Street between 1893-1894 followed by Reuben Siegel’s Mercantile Company at 7 Main Street between 1898-1900., a harness shop run by Elias Howe between 1901-1902,, two schools – one for girls serving grades 1-6 which opened in 1896 under direction of Reverend Nevin Eldredge from Sayre School District #2 & one for boys serving grades 7-12 under instructionof Rev[Herbert] Crosby from Sayre School District #1 – all leading to rapid socialization among its burgeoning community that soon boasted over fifty contributing businesses! Best known locally for its infamous case of hysteria known as “The House Onameron” or simply “The Case”—the resulting publicity created such demand that additional buildings were erected adjacent to existing residences bordering Prospect Park providing ample living space yet still remaining isolated off the beaten path giving rise to an early 20th century reputation as being “the gilded age cognoscenti suburbia”! By 1904 there were six businesses closed due primarily to competition from new suburban developments without any corresponding economic activity taking place within classic amityvillian boundaries!! What once comprised closeknit small town functionality quickly dissipated following waves OF commercialism industryizing life & ultimately degrading quality Of life opportunities resultant !!
