Amityville is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 7,771 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for Amityville Parsonage, which was built in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his wife Isabella Shortridge Conte on a tract of land in what is now Amityville Village. The parsonage became an Episcopal parish after it was purchased by Bishop John Woolridge of Utica in 1822. In 1834, the property was bought by George Hearst and renamed Hearst Manor after him. In 1915, developers James Halliburton and Jock Mahoney bought the Amityville site from George Hearst for $1 million and began construction on a housing development that would become known as "Hearst Manor." The first houses were finished in 1917. However, due to World War I shortages of building materials, most of the homes were finished with wood frame only. The developer ceased operations during World War II because he could not find enough lumber to build more homes; however, many remain standing today as examples of American Craftsman architecture. After the war ended, much activity took place within the community which led to its nickname "the Landmark Community".

The original cabin still stands today and is open to the public as a museum. In 1818, two members of the Amity family moved into the house which became known as "the White House". The house was used by both George Washington and John Adams during their time as presidents of America. It was also used by James Kapp for several years before he bought it from Kapp's widow in 1903 and renamed it "Amityville". In 1922, all five residents of Amityville killed themselves after discovering they were under surveillance by Federal authorities investigating possible links to organized crime. This event is commonly referred to as "The Massacre."
The Amityville Horror was a case of home invasion and murder in which the bodies of four people were found inside the house on Long Island in 1951. The murders are believed to have been committed by three brothers, Ronald, John and Rick Amity, who had moved into the house after their father's death.
