The first gun sights in Albany were installed by Captain John G. Morehead in 1814 on a wharf next to the present day Capitol Building. The Captain's gunsight was designed for use with his cannon on the wharf, and was not exportable. It is uncertain how many guns were mounted with these sights throughout New York City in 1814-1816. In 1829, Major General James S. Hill purchased an old fortification known as Fort George at what is now the corner of Maiden Lane and State Street in Albany from Governor Nicholas Biddle. The new fortification served as the home of General Hill's Headquarters until his death in 1837. In 1840, Major General Winfield Scott took over command of Union forces stationed at Albany and ordered all artillery east of Troy be moved to Fort George so that they could better support the campaign against Napoleon Bonaparte's French Army during the Mexican-American War. In 1865, Colonel Amos Kendall replaced Major General Winfield Scott as Commander-in-Chief of Union Forces stationed at Albany and ordered all artillery west of Troy to be moved back to Fort George so that they could better support operations against Confederate forces retreating from Petersburg following the Battle of Appomattox Court House. During World War II, Battery A (2nd Battalion) 9th Regiment (New York Volunteer Infantry) was located near Castle Square just north of South Stuyvesant Boulevard between West Broadway and East Broad Street; it operated out of this location beginning in 1942 until 1945 when it relocated to Battery Park City adjacent to Times Square..
Albany, New York is a city in the state of New York, located on the southern end of the Finger Lakes region. The population was 153,682 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The first known inhabitants of Albany were Algonquian-speaking Native Americans who lived along Lake George and adjacent areas before European contact. Europeans first came to Albany by way of what is now Niagara County in 1624 as part of an effort to trade with nearby Huron people. Jesuit missionaries built a mission here in 1627, and by 1701 had become the second largest town in Western New York. In 1785, it became a county seat under territorial government when Albany County was created from parts of Erie and Seneca counties. In 1814, during the War of 1812, Albany was burned by British forces following their invasion of New York State; it remained uninhabitable for many years thereafter. Construction began on what would become Union Hall – now known as Central Square – on Permanent Court House Square in 1825, and construction continued until 1828, when it was interrupted due to military hostilities between Great Britain and America that lasted until 1847. The building served as both the courthouse for Albany County (from 1830 until its abolition in 1800) and as a hospital for war-related patients from 1828 until 1865; it also hosted public meetings throughout its history. In 1898, construction began on Oneida Center – now known as State University Plaza – which would serve as the centerpiece of downtown Albany since its opening two years later; today, Central Square remains one of downtown's most popular tourist destinations. During much of its history (c.-1814-1898), Albany was an important political center in Western New York; four Ulysses S Grant presidential campaigns were held here (1868-, 1880-, 1904-05*, 1908*). Additionally, General Lew Wallace's ill-fated campaign for Ulysses S. Grant's re-election in 1968 originated here (Wallaceandafter moved to Buffalo). Today, however, Albany retains some significant cultural attractions including art galleries and theaters dotting central square; several other notable historical sites exist within or close proximity to downtown such as Fort Orange Battlefield Park (where Alexander Hamilton fought against British troops), Clinton Presidential Library & Museum (), and City Hall ().
