Albany was founded by British colonists on an area now known as Goldsboro Township on December 12, 1785. The settlement was named for King George II of Great Britain who had been born there on November 13th that year. In 1814, the Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812 and ceded to the United States all but northeastern Canada (the border with Ontario still remains unresolved). As a result of this treaty, Albany became part of the new United States federal district called New York City proper. On January 15th 1825, Alexander Hamilton resigned his seat in Congress to become Secretary of state under President James K. Polk and opened up what would become one of America's most vibrant commercial centers during this time period - witness today's Union Square which he developed from a tiny strip along Fishkill Avenue between West Broadway and Pearl Street into one large thoroughfare flanked by two tall buildings on each side –today's flagship bank building and First National Bank. In 1840, real estate developer Augustus Kelley bought land east side immediately southwest of Union Square from the original proprietors for $10 per acre; later he built what is now Oneonta Hall (15 Broadwalk) from this land with additional property surrounding it to form present day Oneonta Park (now part of Queens), which also served as Albany's first incorporated town hall. In 1845–1846 construction began on what would become State Capitol Hill – then known as Palace Hill after General David Hunter’s previous home there – next door to Oneonta Hall and completed within just three years including four massive tower blocks financed largely by Kelley himself totaling 281 feet high at their peak; these were followed soon afterward by another series Of towers reaching heights over 300 feet while still retaining much lower walls than those originally erected until 1898 when they were replaced entirely by today’s iconic Golden Dome –an event which helped add significantly to Legislatures power even before statehood! Albany, New York is a city in the U.S. state of New York and the capital of the Albany-Schenectady Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is named after George Washington's Mount Vernon plantation on which he resided for almost 20 years as General-in-Chief during his first term as President from 1785 to 1789. The original inhabitants of what is now Albany were Algonquian Indian tribes who lived near modern day Troy before being displaced by Europeans in 1624. Dutch traders arrived in 1637 and began trading with these Native Americans; however, no permanent settlements were established until 1654 when English colonists arrived seeking fur trade goods southward along the Great Lakes region. In 1685, English settlers reached what would become Albany through an arduous journey overland from Newark amity (now part of Newark/Newark Liberty International Airport). By 1700, much of present-day Albany had been developed as a site for agricultural production that supported small villages within miles of each other. On April 10, 1751 Sir John Johnson founded Fort Orange on Governors Island to protect British interests on Manhattan Island against French incursions; this was later renamed Fort George after King George II’s son Prince Charles Edward Stuart who was then living at Nassau Palace (now part of Hempstead Township). In 1756 Governor Jonathan Trumbull ordered construction begun on enlarging or rebuilding Fort Orange which soon became known as Capitol Hill due to its location atop a hill overlooking downtown Albany. In 1802 Napoleon Bonaparte sought refuge on Ellis Island during his exile from France following his defeat at Austerlitz; upon landing he met Alexander Hamilton who convinced him to come to America instead and eventually became president despite having no legal right to do so because he lacked an inheritance from his father Napoleone III. Here he purchased land west ofpresent-day Buffalo Niagara Falls which served as his primary retreat until September 1814 when he retreated back upriver along the Erie Canal into Canada where he lost most everything including all but six thousand pounds sterling He died penniless two days later while attempting an escape across Lake Ontario aboard HMS "Invincible".
