The first European settlement in what is now Albany was by Dutch colonists from New Netherland who founded a trading post at Fort Orange in 1614. The city became part of England under Queen Anne in 1707 following its capture from Sweden during the Seven Years' War. In 1801, it became an independent country when NY became a US state. In 1898, it adopted its current name, after General Alexander Hamilton, before becoming an anchor point for shipping on both sides of the Hudson River until 1955 when it was connected to New York City by ferry service only. The earliest known inhabitants of present-day Albany were Paleo-Indians who hunted and gathered plants along riverbanks and coastal plains near where they lived today. There are numerous possible explanations as to how such early humans came to live in this area; one possibility is that they traveled downriver over land or passed through water onto shorelines where they collected supplies before returning back upriver again. By 1000 AD there were extensive villages within present-day Albany City limits dating back to 12 Dancehoga people groups that resided east side of Susquehanna River (now Livingston County).
