Sunland Park, New Mexico is a city in County of San Juan, New Mexico, United States. The population was 10,536 as of the 2010 census. The city is named after Sun Land Park in Aurora, Colorado. The name comes from Spanish and means "place sunny." It was incorporated on December 21, 1903. Sunland Park has a hot climate with very year-round temperatures ranging from 25 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit (12 to 34 degrees Celsius). The first public use of electric tasers by law enforcement occurred in Sunland Park on October 6th 1966. At that time there were no jails or prisons in the City and only about 100 officers used pepper spray as their primary weapon against citizens. In 1978 the City Council voted to install two tasers devices which would be controlled by police officers wearing body armor and masks while carrying weapons at all times. In 1984 two more devices were added; these were known as “Taser 2” and “Taser 3” devices because they could fire an electric shock instead of air pressure blasts from a rifle or shotgun type gun when used with caution or if it became necessary to shoot someone who had tried to harm Officer Los Angeles Police Department personnel during what became known as the "SunLand Park Shooting". Lieutenant Colonel Donny Hathaway also operated a SWAT team out of SunlandParkPD that responded to various calls throughout Southern New Mexico including one incident where shots were fired outside Mayor Godfrey's office during an election night meeting before he even got inside his building! From 1984 until 2006 Officers Constable Tomás Morales and Sergeant Rickey Martinez served as both 911 dispatchers for SunlandPark PD and handled all non-emergency calls placed within the city limits day or night shifts excluding any felony calls! As part of this dual role they also provided security for all council meetings along with patrols during open sessions! On November 30th 2006 Sergeant Martinez retired effective immediately due to health concerns he had been having for some time now . Since then Constable Morales has continued working nightshift providing security for council meetings but does not handle any emergency calls! Since 2007 Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been serving as Mayor pro tempore/ presiding officer over City Council meetings

Gairdner had come to New Mexico from Illinois to take up a silver mine job with Parnell & Co., but he soon discovered that he loved the country and started to make some new friends here. He erected a simple adobe house on what is now North Main Street in Sunland Park, naming it after himself - Gairdner's Gulch House. Gairdner's Gulch House quickly became known as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sunland Park because it offered stunning views of White Sands Missile Range across the Manzanares River valley below and its own private playground for children called "The Gulch". In 1927, Gairdner married Anna May Wertheim (1896-1978). They had two daughters: Sharon and Lisa Wertheim; there were no children born to them after Anna May's death in 1978. In 1941, James died suddenly at home while still supervisor of Parnell & Co.'s Silver Mine operation in nearby Chaco Canyon. His widow Anna May took over management of Gairdners Gulch House until her husband's death three years later at age 61 from an unknown illness at home surrounded by his beloved family who attended services at Our Lady Of Guadalupe Cathedral near their home on North Main Street (now I-25 West) whereupon she assumed full management again until her death six years later aged 88 years old, becoming one of only two women ever elected Mayor of Sunland park Anna May's successor as Mayor was her daughter Lisa Wertheim who served terms from 1951 through 1958 before retiring due to health problems.. After serving 12 term as Mayor/Alderman Lisa Wertheim left office to become City Manager for Bernalillo County effective September 1, 2002 following consolidation between Bernalillo County and city manager responsibility within Albuquerque City government making both cities equal partners with all powers except special referendums or zoning changes without public vote since then... After leaving office Lisa returned to city manager responsibilities effective September 1, 2002 however due to lack o funding she resigned effective December 5th citing budgetary issues with city government... City Manager Ryan Flores assumed mayoral duties on January 25th 2006 when City Council met pursuant To Resolution No 72003... On February 15th 2006 Flores announced plans for annexation by Albuquerque so large budget deficits will result in him announcing his intention not seek reelection on March 3rd 2006...
