Sunland Park, New Mexico is a small town located in the southeast corner of El Paso County, Texas. It is bordered by the Mexican state of Chihuahua to the south and east, and by Webb County, Texas to the north. The population of Sunland Park was 1,023 as of 2010. The first settlers in Sunland Park arrived in 1892. A post office was established at Sunland Park in 1895. The name Sunland Park was derived from a Spanish word meaning "sweet water." In 1907, John Pemberton bought land in Sunland Park and laid out a town square on which he erected a hotel and other buildings. He named his town Sun Valley after his home valley in Scotland. In 1912, Wm Hite built a large farmstead near the center of Sun Valley. This farmstead became known as Hite's Hill because it stood on high ground that offered excellent views of Mesa Verde National Monument (a national park). In 1933, George Sarton founded Sarton Oil Company on Hite's Hill with plans to produce oil for local use rather than export to Mexico City. Production began in 1934 and continued until 1938 when World War II interrupted production for lack of war materiel. A new oil refinery was built at San Antonio de la Plata about 10 miles west of Sun Valley in 1940 and production continued until 1957 when it closed due to environmental problems caused by gas drilling operations adjacent to the old refinery site. -Sun Valley had two schools:one elementary school operated from 1906-1910 while another opened in 1911; both were closed during World War I while most students relocated to San Antonio de la Plata where they completed their education -In 1933 Wm Hite founded Sarton Oil Company with plans to produce oil for local use instead of export -Production began in 1934 but stopped due to World War II
