Sunland Park is a small, unincorporated community in San Juan County, New Mexico, United States. It lies on the eastern edge of the Jemez Mountains and is located at an elevation of 5,830 feet (1,815 m). Sunland Park was laid out in 1892 by John J. Pritchard and named for his ranch in Sunland, California. The community began to grow slowly until its population reached 100 people in 1906. The post office was opened in 1907 and discontinued operation in 1912. The first store opened in 1911 and the first telephone line was connected to Sunland Park in 1915. The community had two schools from 1915 to 1923 but both closed due to lack of students or money. A new school was built between 1927 and 1930 but it also shut down due to lack of funds. The last active business in Sunland Park was the Sunland General Store which operated from 1951-1964 when it went out of business due to competition from nearby towns such as Gallup and Las Cruces. In 1984, all businesses within the town closed except for one restaurant which continued operations until 1991 under the name American Legion Post No. 617 until it too ceased operations due to financial difficulties
