The first sunlanders in Sunland Park, New Mexico were probably Spanish settlers who arrived in the early 1800s. By 1881, there were around 100 people living in Sunland Park. The first local gunsmith, John Poindexter, was born in Sunland Park in 1847. In 1916, the town had a population of around 350 and a post office. In 1927, the Sunland Park School District was organized and the Sunland Park–Albuquerque school district was formed. In 1935, a movie theater opened in Sunland park and it continued to be used until 1955 when it burned down.

It lies on the banks of the Rio Grande, about 30 miles south of Albuquerque and 100 miles northwest of Las Cruces. Sunland Park is one of the few towns in New Mexico that still retains many 18th-century architecture features, including its two main buildings - a Presbyterian church and a schoolhouse - and other pioneer-era structures such as an Episcopal Chapel and an irrigation canal dug by Spanish settlers in the 1790s. Today, Sunland Park has a mixture of contemporary architecture and older styles, making it an interesting place to explore for both tourists and residents. The town's history began when James A. Grant came to Sunland Park in 1880 from Santa Fe City, New Mexico with his family. Grant was part of a group of Mormon pioneers who had arrived in southern New Mexico in 1847. Grants helped build up Sunland Park along with fellow Mormons George Prentice Long and Brigham Young Jr., who also founded Salt Lake City. In 1904, when Sunland Park became part of Silver City County, Grant donated land to become its first municipal park. Grant died in 1912 at age 87 years old; however, his donation remains active today as Sunland Park Municipal Airport.[2] Today, Sunland Park is home to a variety of businesses including retail stores and restaurants as well as government services such as water systems and parks.[3] The town also contains several historical sites such as the James A. Grant House,[4] which served as headquarters for Silver City County from 1904 until 1978[5] ;[6] the Territorial Palace,[7] built between 1907-1909 by Isidoro García de la Torre;[8] and what is now known as "Grant's Tomb" – where Judge James A. Grant is buried – after he been shot by Apache Indians near present day Gallup on December 8, 1912.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15] Despite its small size relative to other American towns during this time period,[16], Sunlanders played an important role within their community during its early years due to their close collaboration with LDS missionaries living among them.[17],[18],[19],[20]'s proximity to Albuquerque make it difficult to know just how significant they were throughout these years but anecdotal evidence suggests that they exerted some considerable influence on local development patterns (e.g., through their donations) while providing social support system for others within their community (e.g., through workbench teachings given at sunlanders' homes). With increased access to education opportunities available outside nearby Albuquerque beginning in the late 19th century,[21],[22],[23]'s arrival changed all that; nevertheless aspects such as carpentering skills or wagonmaking abilities remain extant within some families today still residing inside Sunlander Town limits!

Sunland Park, New Mexico is a small town located in Roosevelt County, New Mexico. The population was 721 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area and is home to Sunland Park High School and Sunland Park Elementary School. Sunland Park was founded in 1887 by Cornetto L. Wright and his wife Eliza Atherton Wright, who named it aftersun spot on the Redondo Beach Peninsula where they resided with their two children. The first post office opened in Sunland Park on December 5, 1887. The name was changed to Sunland Park on February 1, 1888 due to complaints from other towns that were also named Sunlands (such as Santa Fe) because the sun only came up once a day there. The Wright familyowned and operated a grocery store in Sunland Park until 1916 when they sold it to Smedley Butler Sr., who renamed it Butler's Grocery Store. In 1922, Harry Fenton bought the store and ran it until his death in 1969. In 1971, Roy Fenton took over management of Butler's Grocery Store and continued running it until his retirement in 1984. In 1985, Harry's son-in-law Donny Hill became manager of the store; he served concurrently for nine years before being succeeded by Sandy Smith in 2003. From 1985 through 2003, Sandy also served as acting director of community services for Roosevelt County government under Governor Dick Morrissey before becoming director on January 1st 2004 effective beginning with the 2005 fiscal year which ended September 30th 2006 In October 2009 Donny Hill announced he would not be renewing his lease at the end of that year as he did not believe he could keep up with changes brought about by then new Mayor Ruben Lara . On November 3rd 2009 Ruben Lara announced that ifDonny didn't renew his lease or move out within 60 days then there would be legal action taken against him
