When he founded Sunland Park, he did so because he believed that it would be a great place to raise cattle and find new markets for his products. Sunland Park became an important center for mail delivery in New Mexico during the early 1900s. In 1916, a post office was built within walking distance of the stores and businesses in Sunland Park. Today, there are still several mailboxes located around town which date back to those days. Most people who live here remember their childhoods here – playing outside on the wide open fields or riding horses around the community square near the high school. There are also summertime traditions such as hot dogs and applesauce served from trucks parked on Main Street during July 4th weekend tradition called "Sunlander". Today's economy depends heavily on agriculture which includes sheep farming, corn production, cattle ranching and other related activities such as manufacturing cheese products or brewing beer. However, tourism is also growing increasingly important; both visitors to see everything from Native American ruins to cowboy shows come through Sunland Park each year.

Sunland Park is an unincorporated community in Doña Ana County, New Mexico. The population was 1,964 at the 2010 census. It is located east of Gallup and south of Sunland on U.S. Route 66. The name "Sunland" came from a Spanish word meaning " Sunshine." In 1881, John Waddell settled in what is now Sunland Park and built a trading post there. He named it after his home state of New York City, where he had been born in 1795. In 1907, Harry Houdini spent the night at Sunland Park while on his way to visit Durango and Santa Fe horses corralled there for the annual roundup with agents of the United States Treasury Department organized by Senator Arthur Hayden Bancroft. On July 9, 1910, Pancho Villa made an attack on Las Cruces before traveling to Sunland Park to stage a public execution that would serve as propaganda for his insurgency against Mexican rule within the United States borderlands. Villa's forces destroyed several businesses along U.S.-New Mexico State Road 66 in what is now part of Sunland Park before finally surrendering at about 11 pm local time on July 10th in front of some 3,000 spectators who had gathered to watch proceedings from a hilltop location about two miles west of town center

In 1973, Sunland Park voters passed an ordinance that allowed for the development of a city park within the boundaries of the town. The park was eventually built and opened to the public in 1977. Today, Sunland Park is an important center for local government and culture in New Mexico.
