Sunland Park is located in Graham County, New Mexico and was founded in 1887 by Jameson Sun. The community became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1971. As of the 2010 Census, Sunland Park had a population of 5,823. Sunland Park was named for Jameson Sun, who donated land to the town. The first post office opened in 1889, and the last mail operation stopped operations in 1984. The main industry in Sunland Park until the late 20th century was farming; however, this has since given way to an increase of manufacturing businesses over the years. Today, many of Sunland Park's residents work within New Mexico's government or private sector industries. Some notable companies that have been based in Sunland Park include Black Hawk Energy Partners LP., Diamondback Mining Co., Golden West Petroleum Corporation LP., Humble Oil & Gas Company LLC., NMDA Incorporated and Rio Grande National Forest Department Store.
